Mark Clark Bridge
The Mark Clark Bridge was a girder bridge that carried a State Route 532 across the Stillaguamish River between Stanwood, Washington, and Camano Island. It was the only form of road access to Camano Island from 1950 until 2010, when it was demolished. The bridge was named for Mark W. Clark, a decorated Army officer who spent time on Camano Island. The water surrounding Camano Island is too shallow for ferry service, which made this bridge a critical link for island residents and visitors. The bridge replaced an earlier swing bridge that opened in 1909 and was part of the first highway between Stanwood and Camano Island. Shortly after the highway was incorporated into the state highway system in 1945, a $615,000 replacement was planned by the state government at the request of Stanwood, Camano Island, and the former town of East Stanwood. Stillaguamish River
The Stillaguamish River is a river in the northwestern region of the U.S. state of Washington. It is mainly composed of two forks, the longer North Fork Stillaguamish () and the South Fork Stillaguamish. The two forks join near Arlington. From there the Stillaguamish River proper flows for to Puget Sound. The river's watershed drains part of the Cascade Range north of Seattle. Course The Stillaguamish River is formed from the confluence of the North and South Forks, both of which rise in the Cascades. Between the North and South forks there is a portion of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest called the Boulder River Wilderness. Stanwood is a city in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. The city is located north of Seattle, at the mouth of the Stillaguamish River near Camano Island. As of the 2010 census, its population is 6,231. Stanwood was founded in 1866 as Centerville, adopting its current name in 1877 after the arrival of postmaster Daniel O. Pearson. Washington State Route 532
State Route 532 (SR 532) is a short Washington state highway in Island and Snohomish counties, located in the United States. It connects Camano Island and Stanwood to a junction with Interstate 5 (I-5) northwest of Arlington. The eastern section of the road was constructed in 1887 and was connected to Camano Island by a cable ferry, which was replaced by a bridge opened in 1909. The highway was paved in 1916 and acquired by the state government in 1945, becoming Secondary State Highway 1Y (SSH 1Y). Camano Island
Camano Island is a large island in Possession Sound, a section of Puget Sound. It is part of Island County, Washington, and is located between Whidbey Island and the mainland (Snohomish County) by the Saratoga Passage to the west and Port Susan and Davis Slough to the east.
