Mariya Ohurtsova
Mariya Ohurtsova ( uk, Марія Огурцова; born 4 January 1983 in Zaporizhia) is a Ukrainian former swimmer, who specialized in sprint butterfly events. She represented Ukraine, as a 17-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and also trained for the Ukraïna Zaporizhzhia swim team during her sporting career. Ohurtsova competed only in the Swimming at the 2000 Summer Olympics – Women's 100 metre butterfly, women's 100 m butterfly at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She achieved a FINA B-cut of 1:02.23 from the Ukrainian National Championships in Kyiv. She challenged seven other swimmers in heat three, including Thailand's three-time Olympian Praphalsai Minpraphal. Coming from fifth at the final turn, Ohurtsova faded down the stretch to pick up a sixth seed in 1:03.00, almost a full second below her entry standard. Praphalsai "Waen" Minpraphal ( th, ประพาฬสาย มินประพาฬ; born January 7, 1978) is a Thai former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly, but also competed in backstroke and individual medley. She represented Thailand in all three editions of the Olympic Games since 1992, and earned numerous medals in her own specialties at the Southeast Asian Games since 1991. While residing in the United States on her college career, she helped the California Golden Bears set a new world record (1:49.23) and capture the 4×50 m medley title at the 2000 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Butterfly Swimming
The butterfly (colloquially shortened to fly) is a swimming stroke swum on the chest, with both arms moving symmetrically, accompanied by the butterfly kick (also known as the "dolphin kick"). While other styles like the breaststroke, front crawl, or backstroke can be swum adequately by beginners, the butterfly is a more difficult stroke that requires good technique as well as strong muscles. It is the newest swimming style swum in competition, first swum in 1933 and originating out of the breaststroke. Speed and ergonomics The peak speed of the butterfly is faster than that of the front crawl due to the synchronous pull/push with both arms and legs, which is done quickly. Yet since speed drops significantly during the recovery phase, it is overall slightly slower than front crawl, especially over longer distances.
