Marius Sala
Marius Sala (September 8, 1932, Vașcău, Romania - August 19, 2018, Bucharest) was a Romanian linguist, member of the Romanian Academy. His activity gained international academic recognition in the study of Romance languages. Professional activity Marius Sala received his PhD. in Philology in 1967 with the thesis ''"The Phonetics and Phonology of Judeo-Spanish"'' at University of Bucharest. He started his work in 1953 as a researcher at Romanian Academy's Institute of Linguistics "Iorgu Iordan-Al.Rosetti", an institution he presided from 1994 until 2017. Along with being a full member of Romanian Academy (corresponding member from 1994 until 2001), he was also its vice-president from 2006 until 2014. Other institutions he was corresponding member: Real Academia Española (1978), Instituto Mexicano de Cultura (1981), Academia Nacional de Letras from Uruguay (1994), and Academia Peruana de la Lengua (2004). National Order Of Faithful Service
The National Order of Faithful Service ( ro, Ordinul Național "Serviciul Credincios") is the second highest national order of Romania, with the Order of the Star of Romania being the highest national order. Originally it was established as the Medal of Faithful Service in 1878, during the reign of King Carol I. In 1906, the Cross of Faithful Service was added to the existing medal, as a superior class. During the reign of King Carol II, in 1932, the Order was established with four ranks: grand cross, grand officer, commodore, and officer. Between 1940 and 1948, only the medal was awarded. It was discontinued by the communist authorities in 1948, along with all the other Romanian decorations. It was re-instituted on 31 March 2000, alongside the Cross and Medal of Faithful Service. The Romance languages, sometimes referred to as Latin languages or Neo-Latin languages, are the various modern languages that evolved from Vulgar Latin. They are the only extant subgroup of the Italic languages in the Indo-European language family. The five most widely spoken Romance languages by number of native speakers are Spanish (489 million), Portuguese (283 million), French (77 million), Italian (67 million) and Romanian (24 million), which are all national languages of their respective countries of origin. By most measures, Sardinian and Italian are the least divergent from Latin, while French has changed the most. However, all Romance languages are closer to each other than to classical Latin.
