Marion Harding High School (Ohio)
Marion Harding High School is a public high school in Marion, Ohio. Opened in 1893 under the name Marion High School, it received its current name in 1920. It is the only high school in the Marion City School District. The school mascot is the Presidents (often shortened to Prexies) and is symbolized by an eagle named Warren G. They are currently a member of the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference (MOAC). Enrollment was 969 as of October 2017. The school was named after Marion's most famous son, Warren G. Harding. The original school site is a mere 1/2 mile from the Harding Memorial, which is one of the largest presidential memorials located outside of the Washington D.C. area. In 2003, a new high school was erected with assistance of state funds offered for the replacement and/or upgrade of older school facilities. The old building now houses Grant Middle School. Norman Thomas
Norman Mattoon Thomas (November 20, 1884 – December 19, 1968) was an American Presbyterian minister who achieved fame as a socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America. Early years Thomas was the oldest of six children, born November 20, 1884, in Marion, Ohio, to Emma Williams (née Mattoon) and Weddington Evans Thomas, a Presbyterian minister. Thomas had an uneventful Midwestern childhood and adolescence, helping to put himself through Marion High School as a paper carrier for Warren G. Harding's ''Marion Daily Star''. Blues
Blues is a music genre and musical form which originated in the Deep South of the United States around the 1860s. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads from the African-American culture. The blues form is ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll, and is characterized by the call-and-response pattern (the blues scale and specific chord progressions) of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. Blue notes (or "worried notes"), usually thirds, fifths or sevenths flattened in pitch, are also an essential part of the sound. Bill Sims
Bill Sims Jr. (June 23, 1949 – February 2, 2019) was an American blues musician. Early life He was born and grew up in Marion, Ohio, United States, and began playing piano at the age of four. At age 14, he turned professional and joined the rhythm and blues band the Jacksonian Blues, which he left to attend Ohio State University. In 1971, Sims joined another rhythm and blues group, the doo-wop-influenced Four Mints. He left the band in 1976 to form the Lamorians, an avant-garde jazz band influenced by traditional African drumming. In 1988, he returned to the blues, founding Bill Sims and the Cold Blooded Blues Band. He released his debut album, ''Blues Before Sunrise'', in 1992, and in 1999, PBS did a 10-hour Documentary film, documentary on Sims and his Interracial marriage, interracial family (with Sims's partner Karen Wilson). Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra
The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) is an American orchestra based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The largest performing arts organization in Indiana, the orchestra is based at the Hilbert Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis on Monument Circle. History The orchestra was founded in 1930 by Ferdinand Schaefer, a local violin professor, with the help of Leonard A. Strauss. Strauss became the first president of the ISO. In 1937, Fabien Sevitzky was hired as the orchestra's first music director, as the musicians became fully professional, paid a weekly salary for a 20-week season. The orchestra quickly ascended to national prominence, issuing a series of phonograph recordings on RCA Victor and Capitol Records in the 1940s and early 1950s.
