Mario Rodríguez (footballer, Born 1981)
Mario Rafael Rodríguez Rodríguez (born September 14, 1981 in Guatemala City, Guatemala) is a retired Guatemalan football midfielder. He has played for local club Municipal. Rodríguez has played locally also played for Comunicaciones and in Major League Soccer for Columbus Crew. He was also a member of the Guatemala national team. Club career Rodríguez, nicknamed ''El Loco'' (Spanish for ''The Crazy Man''), started his career in Guatemala in 2002 with Comunicaciones, where he would remain until 2004. In February 2004 during the 211th clasico between longtime arch-rivals Municipal and Comunicaciones, he collided with goalkeeper Danny Ortiz causing Ortiz to suffer a torn pericardium. Ortiz was taken to the Hospital Centro Médico where he died two hours later. In 2005, he joined Columbus Crew from Costa Rican side Alajuelense, and in 2006, he played for Miami FC, and with 7 goals and 4 assists he was second in scoring for the club behind Brazilian forward Romário. Guatemala City ( es, Ciudad de Guatemala), known locally as Guatemala or Guate, is the capital and largest city of Guatemala, and the most populous urban area in Central America. Danny Ortiz
Josué Danny Ortiz Maldonado (July 26, 1976 – February 29, 2004) was a Guatemalan football goalkeeper who played for the Guatemalan national team and CSD Municipal. Club career Ortíz played for both Guatemalan giants Comunicaciones and CSD Municipal as well as for CD Suchitepequez and Deportivo Carchá. He succeeded national team goalkeeper Edgar Estrada between the Comunicaciones goalposts when Estrada moved to Municipal, only to take him to Municipal himself a year later in a swap deal which returned Estrada to the ''Cremas''. International career Ortiz made his debut for Guatemala in a February 2001 friendly match against Panama and had collected a total of 10 caps, scoring no goals. He represented his country at the UNCAF Nations Cup 2001 and at the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He was deemed the natural successor to Edgar Estrada in the national team until his premature death. 2023 Guatemala City Mayoral Election
The 2023 Guatemala City mayoral election was held on 25 June 2023, to elect the mayor of Guatemala City, Department of Guatemala and thirteen members of the Municipal Council. Incumbent Ricardo Quiñónez Lemus was eligible for another term. Quiñónez of the Unionist Party (Guatemala), Unionist Party ran for re-election with the support of Valor (political party), Valor. Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa, a pre-candidate of the Semilla (political party), Semilla–Winaq–Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity, URNG–MAIZ coalition, was unable to register due to legal issues, but his team was registered. Under electoral law, if the coalition wins the election, the first councilor would have become the mayor-elect, but she withdrew her candidacy, which led to Ninotchka Matute, the second councilor, becoming the mayor-elect.
