Marinmuseum (previously: Shipyard Museum, ''Varvsmuseet''; alternate: Naval Dockyard Museum; translation: Naval Museum) is a maritime museum located on Stumholmen island, in Karlskrona. It is Sweden's national naval museum, dedicated to the Swedish naval defense and preservation of the country's naval history. History Marinmuseum is one of Sweden's oldest museums. The museum was established in 1752 when King Adolf Frederick began the collection and documentation of naval objects in what was called the Model Room (''Modellkammaren''). He also ordered the preservation of ship models and shipbuilding machinery. During the period of 1953 through 1997, the museum was situated in the barracks of the Örlogshamnen naval harbor. Prior to 1963, it was known as the Shipyard Museum (''Varvsmuseet''). In the 1960s, ten figureheads created by Johan Törnström were brought to the museum. Johan Törnström
Johannes ("Johan") Törnström (born April 17, 1743, in Ekeby, Västmanland; died February 20, 1828 in Karlskrona) was Admiralty sculptor to the Swedish Navy at the Karlskrona naval base. He carved a number of figureheads for naval vessels, which are now housed at the Marinmuseum. Early years The son of a farmer, Törnström apprenticed in Stockholm with the wood sculptor GJ Fast, and with the Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Masreliez (or Maserliez) (1753–1801). While Masreliez trained Törnström in wood carving and cabinet making, he never received formal training at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. His work, and that of Fredrik Henrik af Chapman, the Swedish Naval officer and shipbuilder, was inspired and influenced by the Neoclassical ideas of Admiral Augustin Ehrensvärd. Karlskrona
Karlskrona (, , ) is a locality and the seat of Karlskrona Municipality, Blekinge County, Sweden with a population of 66,675 in 2018. It is also the capital of Blekinge County. Karlskrona is known as Sweden's only baroque city and is host to Sweden's largest naval base and the headquarters of the Swedish Coast Guard. Historically, the city has been home to a German minority, thus enabling the formation of a German Congregational church. It also counted Jewish people in its population. Stumholmen
Stumholmen is a small island to the east of Trossö in Karlskrona, Sweden. It is connected to the center of Karlskrona by the Bastionsgatan bridge. Formerly the property of the Navy, today it houses the National Naval Museum (Marinmuseum), one of Sweden's oldest founded in 1752, the Hyper Island educational complex, and several other historic buildings. The unusual ''Slup- och barkass- skjulet'' (Sloop and Longboat Shed) is noted for its remarkable roof while buildings on Laboratorieholmen once served as an isolation hospital when the town was struck with disease. Figurehead (object)
A figurehead is a carved wooden decoration found at the bow of ships, generally of a design related to the name or role of a ship. They were predominant between the 16th and 20th centuries, and modern ships' badges fulfill a similar role. HSwMS Neptun (Nep)
HSwMS ''Neptun'' is the second of three s, built to operate in the Baltic. ''Neptun'' entered service in December 1980. The next year she was involved an international incident when the Soviet submarine ''U 137'' ran aground outside Karlskrona. The ''Näcken'' class were among the first Swedish submarines to have onboard computers. Her task in the eventuality of war would have been to attack enemy shipping and surveillance duties. ''Neptun'' was decommissioned in 1998 and laid up in Karlskrona. In 2008 she was donated to the Naval Museum Marinmuseum of Karlskrona, Sweden, where she is after restoration on display since 2014.
