Marina Park Historic District
The Marina Park Historic District encompasses the finest collection of high-style late 19th-century residential architecture in the city of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Extending along Park Avenue between Seaside Park and Atlantic Avenue, this area was home to Bridgeport's industrial and civic leaders, and was developed by city booster P.T. Barnum. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Description and history The Marina Park development is located in the South End of Bridgeport, an area now largely taken up by the campus of the University of Bridgeport. The historic district is a small surviving area of a much larger development initiated by P.T. Barnum, who engineered the acquisition of Seaside Park for the city, and built his own residences (neither standing anymore) in the area. Seaside Park (Connecticut)
Seaside Park, located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, is a long crescent-shaped park bordering Bridgeport Harbor, Long Island Sound, and Black Rock Harbor. The park lies within Bridgeport's South End neighborhood. History As Bridgeport rapidly grew in population in the 19th century, residents recognized the need for more public parks. In 1863, ''The Standard'' urged the creation of one or more public parks in the city and a movement to create a park along Long Island Sound and Black Rock Harbor began. By 1864, P. T. Barnum and other residents had donated approximately to create Seaside Park, gradually increased to about by 1884. In 1867, plans for a seawall and a driving track and walkway were made and drawings for the park were obtained from Frederick Law Olmsted whose firm completed the work. The University of Bridgeport (UB) is a private university in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The university is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. In 2021, the university was purchased by Goodwin University; it retain its own name, brand, and board of trustees. Founded originally as the Junior College of Connecticut, it is the only university in Bridgeport and one of the largest in Connecticut. The university offers more than 60 degree programs to over 5,000 students at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. This includes the only naturopathy, Chinese medicine, and chiropractic programs in Connecticut.
