Marilyn Shrude
Marilyn Shrude (born July 6, 1946) is an American composer of contemporary classical music and pianist, and Distinguished Artist Professor of composition at Bowling Green State University, since 1977. Life Born in Chicago, Illinois, Shrude graduated from Alverno College and Northwestern University. Her composition instructors include Alan Stout and M. William Karlins. She is the founder and former director of the Mid-American Center for Contemporary Music and co-directs the Annual New Music & Art Festival. She served as visiting professor of music at Indiana University (Bloomington) in the fall of 1998, Heidelberg College (spring 2001), and Oberlin College (spring 2004), and has also taught at the Interlochen Arts Camp (1990–1997). Her scores are published by American Composers Alliance, Éditions Henry Lemoine (Paris), Neue Musik Verlag Berlin, Southern Music, and Thomas House. Contemporary Classical Music
Contemporary classical music is classical music composed close to the present day. At the beginning of the 21st century, it commonly referred to the post-1945 modern forms of post-tonal music after the death of Anton Webern, and included serial music, electronic music, experimental music, and minimalist music. Newer forms of music include spectral music, and post-minimalism. History Background At the beginning of the twentieth century, composers of classical music were experimenting with an increasingly dissonant pitch language, which sometimes yielded atonal pieces. Kennedy Center Friedheim Awards
The Kennedy Center Friedheim Award was an annual award given for instrumental music composition by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1978 and ended in 1995. The award was given only to American composers. The award was established by Eric Friedheim (1910–2002), the publisher of ''Travel Agent'' magazine and a patron of the arts, and funded by the Eric Friedheim Foundation and the Kennedy Center Corporate Fund. He endowed the award in honor of his father, the pianist Arthur Friedheim (1859–1932), who had studied with Franz Liszt. The first prize was US$5,000, the second prize was $2,500 (originally $2,000), the third prize was $1,000, and the fourth prize was $500. There was no fourth prize until 1984, and the third prize was originally $500. The winners were narrowed down from often over 100 entries, to four or five finalists.
