Marilyn Fay Jones
Marilyn Fay Jones OBE (born 17 February 1940) is an Australian dancer and teacher of dance. She has been described as "the greatest classical dancer Australia has produced". Training and career Jones studied with Tessa Maunder in Newcastle then at the Royal Ballet School in London and danced with the Royal Ballet from 1957 to 1958. She was a principal artist with the Borovansky Ballet and was invited to join its successor, the Australian Ballet as a founding principal in 1962. She danced with the Australian Ballet as a prima ballerina until 1978, when she took up the position of Artistic Director of the company from 1979 to 1982. After receiving a Creative Arts Fellowship from the Australian Government, Jones founded the Australian Institute of Classical Dance in 1991 and became its artistic director. Stanton Welch
Stanton De Burgh Welch (born 1969) is an Australian dancer and choreographer. He currently serves as the Artistic Director of the Houston Ballet. Early life Welch was born in Melbourne to Marilyn Jones and Garth Welch, two prominent Australian dancers. Career Welch was initially trained at the dance school run by his parents. In 1989, after a year as a scholarship student at the San Francisco Ballet School, Welch was accepted into the Australian Ballet where he became a leading soloist. While with The Australian Ballet, Welch developed an interest in choreography and, in 1990, received his first commission. By 1995, he had been appointed a resident choreographer with the Australian Ballet and, in 2003, he was also appointed artistic director of the Houston Ballet. Kirsty Martin
Kirsty Martin (born 1976) is an Australian ballet dancer. She was a star and principal of The Australian Ballet (AB), dancing for the company from 1995 until she retired in 2011. Martin was the company's first member to win the Prix Benois de la Danse. Biography A solicitor's daughter from Leeton, New South Wales, Martin has two brothers. She took her first ballet lesson at the age of four at the Di Salvatore Dance Academy. Martin trained at the Australian Ballet School under Gailene Stock, graduating in 1996. On a travel scholarship, she continued her studies with Gelsey Kirkland in New York where in 1997 she also worked with Twyla Tharp on ''The Storyteller''. She danced ''La Bayadère'' in 1998. A principal dancer (often shortened to principal) is a dancer at the highest rank within a professional dance company, particularly a ballet company. A principal may be male or female. The position is similar to that of '' soloist''; however, principals regularly perform not only solos, but also pas de deux. Principal dancers can be hired into a dance company or can also be a company dancer that is a corps de ballet dancer that gets promoted from within the company. That process can take multiple performance seasons or even years to achieve based on skill level and company interest. Garth Welch
Garth de Burgh Welch (born 14 April 1936) is an Australian dancer and choreographer. Early life and training Welch was born in Brisbane, Queensland. He was educated at the Anglican Church Grammar School. His initial dance training took place under the guidance of the respected teacher Phyllis Danaher. Dancer and choreographer Welch began his career in ''Call Me Madam'' for the J. C. Williamson organisation. He came to the attention of Edouard Borovansky and joined the Borovansky Ballet in 1954. Welch achieved within a relatively short time the rank of Principal Dancer with the company. He also danced with Western Theatre Ballet (later Scottish Ballet) and the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas before returning to Australia at the invitation of Dame Peggy van Praagh as a Principal Dancer with the Australian Ballet in 1962.
