Saint Petersburg ( rus, links=no, Санкт-Петербург, a=Ru-Sankt Peterburg Leningrad Petrograd Piter.ogg, r=Sankt-Peterburg, p=ˈsankt pʲɪtʲɪrˈburk), formerly known as Petrograd (1914–1924) and later Leningrad (1924–1991), is the second-largest city in Russia. It is situated on the Neva River, at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea, with a population of roughly 5.4 million residents. The Wonderful Adventures Of Nils
''The Wonderful Adventures of Nils'' ( sv, Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige, literally ''Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey across Sweden'') is a work of fiction by the Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf, the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in literature. It was originally published in two books, 1906 and 1907, and was first published in English as ''The Wonderful Adventures of Nils'' (1907) and ''The Further Adventures of Nils'' (1911). The two parts are later usually published together, in English as ''The Wonderful Adventures of Nils'', but that name may also refer to the first part alone. Like many leading Swedish intellectuals of her time, Selma Lagerlöf was an advocate of Swedish spelling reform. When first published, this book was also one of the first to adopt the new spelling mandated by a government resolution on April 7, 1906 (see Svenska Akademiens Ordlista). Origin The background for publication was a commission from the National Teachers Assoc ...

Cries And Whispers
''Cries and Whispers'' ( sv, Viskningar och rop, lit=Whispers and Cries) is a 1972 Swedish period drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman and starring Harriet Andersson, Kari Sylwan, Ingrid Thulin and Liv Ullmann. The film, set in a mansion at the end of the 19th century, is about three sisters and a servant who struggle with the terminal cancer of one of the sisters (Andersson). The servant (Sylwan) is close to her, while the other two sisters (Ullmann and Thulin) confront their emotional distance from each other. Inspired by Bergman's mother, Karin Åkerblom, and his vision of four women in a red room, ''Cries and Whispers'' was filmed at Taxinge-Näsby Castle in 1971. Its themes include faith, the female psyche and the search for meaning in suffering, and academics have found Biblical allusions. Unlike previous Bergman films, it uses saturated colour, crimson in particular. After its premiere in the United States, distributed by Roger Corman and New World Pic ...

Hour Of The Wolf
''Hour of the Wolf'' ( sv, Vargtimmen, lit=The Wolf Hour) is a 1968 Swedish psychological horror film directed by Ingmar Bergman and starring Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann. The story explores the disappearance of fictional painter Johan Borg (von Sydow), who lived on an island with his wife Alma (Ullmann) while plagued with frightening visions and insomnia. Bergman originally conceived much of the story as part of an unproduced screenplay, ''The Cannibals'', which he abandoned to make the 1966 film ''Persona''. He took inspiration from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 1791 opera ''The Magic Flute'' and E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1814 novella ''The Golden Pot'', as well as some of his own nightmares. Principal photography took place at Hovs Hallar, Stockholm and Fårö. Themes include insanity, particularly as experienced by an artist, sexuality, and relationships, conveyed in a surreal style and with elements of folklore. Analysts have found allusions to vampire and werewolf legend. Autho ...

The Silence (1963 Film)
''The Silence'' ( sv, link=no, Tystnaden) is a 1963 Swedish drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman and starring Ingrid Thulin and Gunnel Lindblom. The plot focuses on two sisters, the younger a sensuous woman with a young son, the elder more intellectually oriented and seriously ill, and their tense relationship as they travel toward home through a fictional Central European country on the brink of war. The film is the third in a series of thematically related films, following '' Through a Glass Darkly'' (1961) and ''Winter Light'' (1963), which is sometimes considered a trilogy. In addition to interpretations of spiritual issues, ''The Silence'' is sometimes interpreted as presenting its two sister characters as two sides of a single woman, one representing the physical and the other language. Bergman was inspired by his travels around Europe after World War II. Against expectations of the filmmakers, it was a box-office hit. The film was also noted for its frank depic ...

The Virgin Spring
''The Virgin Spring'' ( sv, Jungfrukällan) is a 1960 Swedish rape and revenge film directed by Ingmar Bergman. Set in medieval Sweden, it is a tale about a father's merciless response to the rape and murder of his young daughter. The story was adapted by screenwriter Ulla Isaksson from a 13th-century Swedish ballad, " Töres döttrar i Wänge" ("Töre's daughters in Vänge"). Bergman researched the legend of Per Töre with an eye to an adaptation, considering an opera before deciding on a film version. Given criticism of the historical accuracy of his 1957 film ''The Seventh Seal'', he also invited Isaksson to write the screenplay. Other influences included the 1950 Japanese film ''Rashomon''. Max von Sydow played Töre. Isaksson and Bergman explored a number of themes in ''The Virgin Spring'', questioning morals, vengeance, and religious beliefs. The rape scene was also subject to censorship in screenings in the United States. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign L ...
