Cannabis in New Mexico is legal for recreational use as of June 29, 2021. A bill to legalize recreational use – House Bill 2, the Cannabis Regulation Act – was signed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on April 12, 2021. The first licensed sales of recreational cannabis began on April 1, 2022. Medical use was legalized in 2007 through a bill signed by Governor Bill Richardson. A 1978 law also allowed for medical use, but only through a federally-approved research program. It was the first medical cannabis law enacted by any state. State policy Prohibition (1923) In 1923, New Mexico banned the cultivation, importation, and sale of cannabis. Darren White (politician)
Darren White is a former Sheriff of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. Prior to becoming Bernalillo County Sheriff, he was Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Public Safety in Governor Gary Johnson's cabinet. White resigned when Johnson began advocating the legality of cannabis, legalization of marijuana. White was appointed Chief Public Safety Officer for the City of Albuquerque on December 1, 2009 by the newly elected Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry. He resigned amid controversy involving police shootings and allegations of questionable police procedure in an incident involving a family member. New Mexico House Bill 356
House Bill 356 titled "Cannabis Regulation Act" was a piece of legislation to legalize cannabis in New Mexico. It was advanced by the House Judiciary Committee for a vote by the full New Mexico House of Representatives on February 22, 2019. It was the first time a legalization bill had been advanced to the New Mexico Legislature for a vote. The bill passed in the House, 36–34, on March 7, 2019. The corresponding bill in the New Mexico Senate was S.B. 577. A difference between the bills is that under the Senate legislation, cannabis would be sold in state-owned stores.
