Marijac
Jacques Dumas (7 November 1908 – 21 July 1994), better known as Marijac, was a French comics writer, artist, and editor. Biography Jacques Dumas was born in Paris in 1908. He started his career as a comics artist in te 1930s and used the pen name Marijac. His best known character in this period was the cowboy ''Jim Boum'', which appeared in '' Cœurs Vaillants''. During the war, he entered the Resistance and started the popular magazine '' Coq Hardi'', where he created the series ''Les trois mousquetaires du maquis''. The magazine existed from 1944 until 1963. His focus then shifted to the writing of comics for well known French artists like Raymond Cazanave (''Capitaine Fantôme''), Raymond Poivet (''Colonel X''), Dut, Mathelot, Étienne Le Rallic (''Poncho Libertas''), Kline, Trubert, and Calvo (''Coquin''). Edmond-François Calvo
Edmond-François Calvo (26 August 1892 - 11 October 1957) was a French comics artist. Born in 1892 in Elbeuf, France, he was in the army in the First World War, and started publishing cartoons in the 1920s. He had many different jobs, including working as a woodcarver and an innkeeper, until 1938, when he became a full-time artist. Most of his work had animals as the main characters, which together with his popularity and productivity gave him the nickname "The French Walt Disney". His best known work is ''La bête est morte'' (started clandestinely in 1942, published as a book after the liberation in two parts in 1944-1945), a satire on the second World War with the different countries depicted as different animals, a system that would later be used by Art Spiegelman in his graphic novel ''Maus''. ''Cœurs Vaillants'' (''Brave Hearts''), known later as ''J2 Jeunes'' and ''Formule 1'', was a Catholic French language weekly newspaper for French children. Founded in 1929 by ''l' Union des œuvres catholiques de France'' (The Union of Catholic Works of France; UOCF), the weekly newspaper targeted readers aged 11 to 14 to become part of ''l' Action catholique des enfants'' (The Catholic Action for Children; ACE). The Grand Prix de la ville d'Angoulême is a lifetime achievement award given annually during the Angoulême International Comics Festival to a comics author. Although not a monetary award, it is considered the most prestigious award in Franco-Belgian comics. It has been awarded mainly to French and Belgian authors, but also to international authors. Recipients are, on average, 50 years old. Three women, Florence Cestac, Rumiko Takahashi, and Julie Doucet have been awarded the prize. Galerie Lambiek is a Dutch comic book store and art gallery in Amsterdam, founded on November 8, 1968 by Kees Kousemaker (, – Bussum, ), though since 2007, his son Boris Kousemaker is the current owner. From 1968 to 2015, it was located in the Kerkstraat, but in November 2015, the store moved to the Koningsstraat 27. As of 2018, Lambiek is the oldest comics store in Europe, and the oldest worldwide still in existence. The name "Lambiek" originated as a misspelling of the name of the comics character Lambik, from the popular Suske & Wiske comic book series created by Belgian artist Willy Vandersteen.
