Marigold Southey
Marigold Merlyn Baillieu Southey, Lady Southey (; born 2 May 1928) is an Australian philanthropist who served as Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria from 2001 to 2006. Lady Southey was born in San Francisco into the Myer family, the youngest of four children of Sidney and Merlyn Myer (). She was educated at St Catherine's School, Toorak and the University of Melbourne. From the mid-1950s until 1999, she was director of the Myer family companies. In 1996, she succeeded her brother, Sidney, as president of the philanthropic Myer Foundation until she resigned in 2004. The Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria is a government position in the state of Victoria, Australia, acting as a deputy to the Governor of Victoria. When the governor is out of the state, the lieutenant-governor acts as the governor. This office has often been held concurrently by the Chief Justice of Victoria. History Prior to the separation of the colony of Victoria from New South Wales in 1851, the area was called the Port Phillip District of New South Wales. The Order of Australia is the only Australian order of chivalry. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, to recognise Australian citizens and other persons for achievement, meritorious service, or for both. At that time, Companion of the Order of Australia was the highest of three grades of the Order (Companion, Officer, Member). On 24 May 1976, the grade of Knight or Dame of the Order was established, displacing Companion as the highest grade. On 3 June 1986, the Knight/Dame grade was abolished, and Companion was once again the highest grade.
