Marie Wagner (February 2, 1883 – April 1, 1975 or March 28, 1975) was an American tennis champion. Biography Wagner was born on February 2, 1883, in Freeport, New York. An outstanding tennis player, she won the United States Indoor Championships a record number of times. In the singles event, she won the title six times (1908, 1909, 1911, 1913, 1914, and 1917) while in doubles, she was successful in 1910, 1913 (with Clara Kutross), 1916 (with Molla Mallory) and in 1917 (with Margaret Taylor). At the U.S. National Championships, her best showing was reaching the final in 1914 which she lost in three sets to reigning champion Mary Browne. Wagner was ranked in the Top 10 in the U.S. between 1913 (the first year women were ranked) and 1920. She achieved her highest national ranking of No.3 in 1914. The U.S. Women's Indoor Championships, was a national tennis championship for women that was sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association and held 79 times from 1907 through 2001 at various locations and on various surfaces. The event was affiliated with the WTA Tour from 1971 through 2001 (excluding 1977). Marie Wagner won more singles titles (6) and Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman won more doubles titles (10) at this tournament than any other woman. Lois Felix holds the record for runners-up in singles (4) while Wightman and Norma Taubele Barber hold the record for runners-up in doubles (5). The women's tournament started in 1907 when they joined the men at the Seventh Regiment Armory in New York to form a combined tournament. Elisabeth Moore won the first title. Molla Mallory
Anna Margrethe "Molla" Bjurstedt Mallory (née Bjurstedt; 6 March 1884 – 22 November 1959) was a Norwegian tennis player, naturalized American. She won a record eight singles titles at the U.S. National Championships. She was the first woman to represent Norway at the Olympics. Tennis career Although she had won a bronze medal in singles for Norway at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, and was the many-time champion of her homeland, Mallory was relatively unknown when she arrived in New York City to begin work as a masseuse in 1915. She entered the U.S. Indoor Championships that year unheralded and beat Marie Wagner 6–4, 6–4, which was the first of her five singles titles at that tournament. Margaret Taylor (tennis)
Margaret "Peggy" Mackall Taylor ( ''née'' Smith; September 21, 1788 – August 14, 1852) was the first lady of the United States from 1849 to 1850 as the wife of President Zachary Taylor. She married Zachary in 1810 and lived as an army wife, accompanying her husband to his postings in the American frontier. She had six children, two of whom died in childhood while the remaining four were sent to boarding schools in the eastern United States. After a brief period of stable domestic life in the 1840s, her husband was elected President of the United States to her dismay in 1848. She managed the White House from the upstairs residence while she delegated her responsibilities as White House hostess to her daughter. She was highly reclusive throughout her tenure as first lady, which ended abruptly with her husband's death in 1850. She lived in obscurity until her death two years later. Mary Kendall Browne (June 3, 1891 – August 19, 1971) was an American professional tennis player and an amateur golfer. She was born in Ventura County, California. Biography According to A. Wallis Myers of The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail, Browne was ranked in the world top 10 in 1921 (when the rankings began), 1924, and 1926, reaching a career high of world no. 3 in those rankings in 1921. Browne was included in the year-end top 10 rankings issued by the United States Lawn Tennis Association in 1913 (when the rankings began), 1914, 1921, 1924, and 1925. She was the top-ranked U.S. player in 1914. She also played golf and was runner-up at the 1924 U.S. Women's Amateur to champion Dorothy Campbell Hurd.
