Marie Therese Vauzou
Marie-Thérèse Vauzou (August 10, 1825 – November 3, 1907) was a French Catholic nun who is known as having been the Mistress of Novices and later Mother Superior at the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, during the time that Bernadette Soubirous was alive. Biography She was born in Collonges-la-Rouge, France; her father was a notary. She rose through the ranks of the Saint Gildard Convent and in 1861 became Mistress of Novices. A few years later, Marie-Bernard "Bernadette" Soubirous began to visit stating she was interested in becoming a postulant, a process she started in 1865. In 1858, Soubirous had become famous within the Catholic religion after having claimed she had visions of seeing the Immaculate Conception. While Sister Vauzou supported Soubirous joining the convent and later admitted a certain fondness and acceptance of Soubirous's "charisma and beauty", Vauzou never fully believed her claims of visions and treated her poorly. Collonges-la-Rouge (, literally ''Collonges the Red''; oc, Colonjas) is a commune in the Corrèze department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. History The monks of Charroux Abbey founded a priory in the 8th century which attracted a population of peasants, craftsmen and tradesmen who lived and prospered around its fortified walls. The welcoming of pilgrims for Compostelle through Rocamadour was a lasting source of profit. In 1308, the viscount of Turenne granted the village a right to high, medium and low jurisdiction, permitting it to govern the birth of lineages of prosecutors, lawyers and notaries. The enclosure soon became too small to contain the entire population, and faubourgs were created. Espace Bernadette Soubirous Nevers
Espace Bernadette Soubirous Nevers is a former convent and the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Nevers in Nevers, France, and is where the body of Saint Bernadette reposes. In 1970, it was converted into a sanctuary run by volunteers and a few sisters who administer to pilgrims and manage the building. History In 1853, Dominique-Augustin Dufêtre, bishop of Nevers, assigned the Church of Saint Lupus and Saint Gildard in Nevers to be rebuilt as a religious house for the Sisters of Charity of Nevers. By that time, not much was left but a rectangular building; the remains of the thirteenth-century building were used to build the Saint Gildard Convent, which was officially consecrated on 15 July 1856. This is the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, where in 1866 Bernadette of Lourdes entered to do her novitiate and where she died in 1879. ''The Song of Bernadette'' (German: ''Das Lied von Bernadette'') is a 1941 novel that tells the story of Saint Bernadette Soubirous, who, from February to July 1858 reported eighteen visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lourdes, France. The novel was written by Franz Werfel and translated into English by Lewis Lewisohn in 1942. It was extremely popular, spending more than a year on the ''New York Times'' Best Seller list and 13 weeks in first place. The novel was adapted into the 1943 film '' The Song of Bernadette'', starring Jennifer Jones. Origins Franz Werfel was a German-speaking Jew born in Prague in 1890. He became well known as a playwright. Dame Gladys Constance Cooper, (18 December 1888 – 17 November 1971) was an English actress, theatrical manager and producer, whose career spanned seven decades on stage, in films and on television. Beginning as a teenager in Edwardian musical comedy and pantomime, she starred in dramatic roles and silent films before the First World War. Fontfroide Abbey
Fontfroide Abbey (french: Abbaye Sainte-Marie de Fontfroide; la, Fons frigidus) is a former Cistercian monastery in France, situated 15 kilometers south-west of Narbonne near to the Spanish border. It was founded in 1093 by Aimery I, Viscount of Narbonne, but remained poor and obscure, and needed to be refounded by Ermengarde, Viscountess of Narbonne. In 1144 it affiliated itself to the Cistercian reform movement. Shortly afterwards the Count of Barcelona gave it the land in Spain that was to form the great Catalan monastery of Poblet, of which Fontfroide counts as the mother house, and in 1157 the Viscountess Ermengard of Narbonne granted it a great quantity of land locally, thus securing its wealth and status. Canonization is the declaration of a deceased person as an officially recognized saint, specifically, the official act of a Christian communion declaring a person worthy of public veneration and entering their name in the canon catalogue of saints, or authorized list of that communion's recognized saints.
