Marie Goldschmidt
Marie Goldschmidt aka Mme. (Gustave) Goldschmidt born Marie Kann (1890–1917) was a French aeronaut who co-piloted a balloon world distance record in 1913 of over 2,400 km. She was the first woman to enter an Fédération Aéronautique Internationale balloon race when she finished sixth in the Gordon Bennett Cup. Life She was born in 1890 and named Marie Kann. She married a man called Gustave or Gustavo Goldschmidt and frequently used his name as "Madame Gustave Goldschmidt". Her parentage and place of birth are not known. She came to notice as a balloonist. Marie Surcouf
Marie Surcouf (19 May 1863 – 11 March 1928) was a French balloonist and feminist. In 1906, she was the first French woman to earn an aeronautical balloon pilot's license and later that year she became the first French woman to pilot a balloon flight with an all-woman crew. Surcouf founded the women's aeronautical club La Stella and served as its President. Early life and marriages Marie Valentine Nelly Bayard was born on 19 May 1863 at Ham ( Somme) the daughter of Félicie (née Pollet) and Ernest Julien Bayard. On 7 February 1882, she married Alberic Roussel (1853–1904), a medical doctor. They had two children: Pierre Roussel, (9 – 22 April 1886) and André Roussel (1888–1968). Gordon Bennett Cup (ballooning)
The Gordon Bennett Cup (or ) is the world's oldest gas balloon race, and is "regarded as the premier event of world balloon racing" according to the ''Los Angeles Times''. Referred to as the "Blue Ribbon" of aeronautics, the first race started from Paris, France, on September 30, 1906. The event was sponsored by James Gordon Bennett Jr., the millionaire sportsman and owner of the ''New York Herald'' newspaper. According to the organizers, the aim of the contest "is simple: to fly the furthest distance from the launch site." The contest ran from 1906 to 1938, interrupted by World War I and in 1931, but was suspended in 1939 when the hosts, Poland, were invaded at the start of World War II. The event was not resurrected until 1979, when American Tom Heinsheimer, an atmospheric physicist, gained permission from the holders to host the trophy. Beatrix De Rijk
Beatrix de Rijk (1883–1958) was a pioneering Dutch aviator. On receiving her pilot's licence from the Aéro-Club de France on 6 October 1911, she became the first Dutch woman pilot. Early life Born on 24 July 1883 in Surabaya in the Dutch East Indies Beatrix de Rijk was the daughter of Henriëtte Josephina van den Dungen (1850-1919), who was Javanese, and Dutch banker Augustinus Wilhelm de Rijk (1838-1905). Her family were rich, amongst other business ventures they owned the Klampok sugar factory at Banjumas in Central Java. Beatrix grew up with a passion for speed and danger, and was an excellent horsewoman, taking her horses with her on her travels through what was then called the Dutch East Indies.
