Mariam Sultana
Mariam Sultana is a Pakistani astrophysicist. Sultana completed her doctoral studies in astrophysics at the University of Karachi under the supervision of Nuritdinov Salohitdin Nasritdinovich in 2012. She is the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in astrophysics in Pakistan. Sultana teaches as an assistant professor at the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology. Biography Mariam Sultana is from Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan. She received her Masters of Sciences in Applied Mathematics from University of Karachi in 2004. She started her Ph.D. course work in 2006 under the supervision of Salakhutdin Nuritdinov. She specialized in the field of astrophysics and completed her Ph.D. in 2012. She works in extragalactic astronomy and her research focuses on understanding the stability and the formation of ring galaxies. Extragalactic
Extragalactic astronomy is the branch of astronomy concerned with objects outside the Milky Way galaxy. In other words, it is the study of all astronomical objects which are not covered by galactic astronomy. The closest objects in extragalactic astronomy include the galaxies of the Local Group, which are close enough to allow very detailed analyses of their contents (e.g. supernova remnants, stellar associations). As instrumentation has improved, distant objects can now be examined in more detail and so extragalactic astronomy includes objects at nearly the edge of the observable universe. Ring Galaxies
A ring galaxy is a galaxy with a circle-like appearance. Hoag's Object, discovered by Art Hoag in 1950, is an example of a ring galaxy. The ring contains many massive, relatively young blue stars, which are extremely bright. The central region contains relatively little luminous matter. Some astronomers believe that ring galaxies are formed when a smaller galaxy passes through the center of a larger galaxy. Because most of a galaxy consists of empty space, this "collision" rarely results in any actual collisions between stars. However, the gravitational disruptions caused by such an event could cause a wave of star formation to move through the larger galaxy. Other astronomers think that rings are formed around some galaxies when external accretion takes place.
