Maria Zaharia
Maria Ion Zaharia, also known as Măriuca Zaharia (1905 – 6 August 1917), was a Romanian girl who acted as an impromptu artillery observer for the Romanian Army and was killed during the Battle of Mărășești. Biography Born in Pădureni in 1905, Maria lived in August 1917 with her grandfather Ion Zaharia in the village of Haret, close to the front. In the orchard of her grandfather the Romanian Army set up an artillery observation post up a walnut tree that offered a good view of the surrounding landscape. There Maria became acquainted with the Romanian soldiers and was captivated by their work. On 5 August 1917, following a German bombardment, the observer in the Măriuca's orchard was killed and the little girl took his place and communicated via phone what she saw on the battlefield. Mărășești
Mărășești () is a small town in Vrancea County, Western Moldavia, Romania. It administers six villages: Călimănești, Haret, Modruzeni, Pădureni, Siretu and Tișița. Dumitru Almaș (; pen name of Dumitru Ailincăi ; October 19, 1908 – March 12, 1995) was a Romanian journalist, novelist, historian, writer and professor. His prolific output included children's literature, historical novels and textbooks. He was honored by both the Romanian Writers' Society and the subsequent Writers' Union of Romania. He also served as a member of the board of Society for Historical Sciences of Romania. Biography Dumitru Almaș (pseudonym of Dumitru Ailincăi) was born in 1908 to Ion and Mariei Ailincăi (née Cojocaru) in Negrești, Neamț County, Romania. He attended "Petru Rares" High School and graduated in 1928. In 1933, he obtained multiple degrees, from the University of Bucharest for philosophy, history, and geography.
