Maria Sterk
Maria Sterk (born 5 June 1979, in Hallum) is a Dutch marathon speed skater. In 2005, she finished in third position of the Essent Cup and on 11 February of that year she announced to attack the women's world hour speed skating record, which was held by Lilian van Tol at that time. Starting with laps of 37 seconds she took an advantage of a minute over the former record before skating laps of 40 seconds. In the end her average laptime was 39.5 seconds, which was enough to break the record. The record set by van Tol was 34.507,30 metres.

Carien Kleibeuker (born 12 March 1978) is a Dutch former speed skater who is specialised in the long distances, 3000 and mainly 5000 metres. She is the current holder of the Dutch record on the 10,000 metres distances, as well as the current holder of the unofficial world one-hour record, with 40,569.56 metres skated. Speed skating During the Dutch Single Distance Championships Kleibeuker won her first medal at a highly rated tournament as she finished in third position at the 5000 metres. In the following years she participated, but never managed to equal or improve her effort from 2000, until December 2005, when she won the 5000 metres race in the B Division at a World Cup meeting. This effort secured her a nomination for the 2006 Winter Olympics held in Turin. A top-3 ranking at the 2005 Dutch Single Distance Championships would definitely qualify her for the Olympics. Hallum
Hallum is a village in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It is a village in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân and it had a population of around 2,746 in January 2017. The primary language spoken is West Frisian. Before 2019, the village was part of the Ferwerderadiel municipality. The monastery was located in Hallum between 1163 and 1578.
