Maria Olsen (artist)
Maria Olsen (1947 – 21 April 2014) was a New Zealand painter and sculptor. Olsen studied at the Ilam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury from 1962 to 1964. She worked as a teacher part-time then returned to her art full-time in the 1980s. In the 1980s Olsen lived and worked in Ponsonby, Auckland. She became renowned for her large, tactile paintings with three dimensional elements which imbued them with a sculptural quality; reflective of other elements of her practice. During this era she often repeatedly portrayed what appeared to be a large cauldron or tank in a mysterious, darkened space. This repeated motif became iconic of her work. She was a significant element of the Sue Crockford Gallery stable during this period. In 1989 she immigrated to Australia where she lived and worked in North Fitzroy, Melbourne, Victoria for some years. Maria and John then resided in Queensland until she died in 2014. Ilam School Of Fine Arts
The Ilam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury was founded in 1882 as the Canterbury College School of Art. The school became a full department of the university in the 1950s, and was the first department to move to the suburban Ilam site in 1957, in the Okeover Homestead. Art history was included in 1974, and the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree was introduced in 1982. Located in the Christchurch suburb of Ilam, it is informally called the Ilam School of Fine Arts, although this can lead to the school being confused with the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland. University Of Canterbury
The University of Canterbury ( mi, Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha; postnominal abbreviation ''Cantuar.'' or ''Cant.'' for ''Cantuariensis'', the Latin name for Canterbury) is a public research university based in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was founded in 1873 as Canterbury College, the first constituent college of the University of New Zealand. It is New Zealand's second-oldest university, after the University of Otago, itself founded four years earlier in 1869. Its original campus was in the Christchurch Central City, but in 1961 it became an independent university and began moving out of its original neo-gothic buildings, which were re-purposed as the Christchurch Arts Centre. Sue Crockford Gallery
The Sue Crockford Gallery was a contemporary art dealer gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. History Sue Crockford's career in the visual arts began with her role as an Arts Advisory Officer in the Department of Education. When she and her husband, art historian Francis Pound, travelled to New York in 1982 they visited a number of dealer art galleries. On their return, Crockford resolved to open a dealer gallery in Auckland and early in 1985 she opened the Sue Crockford Gallery on Albert Street. The following the gallery moved to Archilles House in Commerce Street and in 1995 to the second floor of the Endeans Building, where it remained until the gallery closed in 2012. Sue Crockford died in 2023. The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is New Zealand's national museum and is located in Wellington.
