Maria Lucília Estanco Louro (1922–2018) was a Portuguese pacifist and opponent of the authoritarian '' Estado Novo'' regime, who became known as a teacher and political activist. Early life Maria Lucília Estanco Louro was born in Beja, Portugal on 27 January 1922, daughter of Albertina Emília Freire and Manuel Francisco Estanco Louro. She graduated in Historical-Philosophical Sciences from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon in 1944. Her thesis, entitled "Paul Gauguin seen in the light of Characterology - Life and Work", sparked controversy as she was the first in the Faculty to write about Art, then considered then a poor relative of History. Beja () is a city and a municipality in the Alentejo region, Portugal. The population in 2011 was 35,854, in an area of . The city proper had a population of 21,658 in 2001. Vila Franca De Xira
Vila Franca de Xira () is a city and municipality in the Lisbon District in Portugal. The population in 2021 was 137,659, in an area of 318.19 km2. Situated on both banks of the Tagus River, 32 km north-east of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, settlement in the area dates back to neolithic times, as evidenced by findings in the Cave of Pedra Furada. Vila Franca de Xira is said to have been founded by French followers of Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, around 1200. The town is mostly famous for its bull-running festivals in July and October. Bulls are raised in the salty marshlands of the Ribatejo, which is also a notable breeding ground for the magnificent Lusitano horse, esteemed for its quick reflexes and maneuverability.
