29th Academy Awards
For the 29th Academy Awards, the Best International Feature Film was introduced as a competitive category, instead of only a Special Achievement Award. The first winner in this new category was Federico Fellini's ''La Strada'' with Anthony Quinn, receiving a further nomination for Best Original Screenplay. This was the first year that all of the five Best Picture nominees were in color, and the first Oscar telecast to be videotaped for later broadcast, for those network affiliates that didn't want to broadcast the event live. All of the Best Picture nominees were large-scale epics: ''The King and I'', George Stevens' ''Giant'', Cecil B. DeMille's ''The Ten Commandments'' (the highest-grossing film of the year), William Wyler's '' Friendly Persuasion'', and the winner, ''Around the World in 80 Days''. The trend toward blockbusters and colorful spectaculars was established for years to come, as ''The Bridge on the River Kwai'', '' Gigi'', and '' Ben-Hur'' followed as Best Pic ...

The Academy Award for Best Costume Design is one of the Academy Awards presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for achievement in film costume design. The award was first given in 1949, for films made in 1948. Initially, separate award categories were established for black-and-white films and color films. For this particular criteria, each submission is reviewed by the costume designer members of the Art Directors Branch prior to the ballot process. Fu ...

The musical score was composed by Nino Rota and conducted by Franco Ferrara. ''War and Peace'' opened on August 21, 1956 to a mixed reception, with some reviewers critical with the film truncating much of Tolstoy's novel, and the casting of 50-year-old Henry Fonda as the 20-year-old Pierre Bezukhov. It received Academy Awards nominations for Best Director, Best Cinematography (Color), and Best Costume Design (Color).
