Maria Barmich
Maria Yakovlevna Barmich (russian: Мари́я Я́ковлевна Ба́рмич; born 1934) is a professor, researcher of the Nenets language, and the first scientist among Nenets women. She was born in the Kaninskaya tundra of the Kanino-Timan region of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Arkhangelsk Oblast. She lives in Saint Petersburg, and she works at the Institute of the Peoples of the North. For many years she has been teaching the Nenets language. She is the author of textbooks on the Nenets language, culture, and life. Naryan-Mar (russian: Нарья́н-Мар; Nenets: Няръянa марˮ, ''Njarjana marꜧ'', literally "red town") is a sea and river port town and the administrative center of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Russia. The town is situated on the right bank of the Pechora River, upstream from the river's mouth, on the Barents Sea. Naryan-Mar lies north of the Arctic Circle. Population: 17,000 (1973). About half of the population of Nenetsia lives in the city. History Industrial development in the area around Naryan-Mar began in 1930, in the course of the first five-year plan of the Soviet Union. The Institute of the Peoples of the North (russian: Институт Народов Севера) is a research and later educationary institute based in Saint Petersburg. Its objective is to examine topics related to the northern minorities in the Soviet Union, and to prepare teachers for the northern boarding schools. One of the central figures involved in the research institute was Vladimir Bogoraz. History The institute was founded in 1930, as four years previously it had become possible to study the languages of the northern peoples in their own right at the Institute for Eastern Studies at Leningrad State University. By the end of 1929, the institute's teachers had joined forces to create the Unified Northern Alphabet (russian: Единый северный алфавит) for use by the linguistic minorities living in the north of the Soviet Union.
