Marguerite Dockrell
Marguerite Dockrell (10 March 1912 – 9 September 1983) was an Irish swimmer. She competed in the women's 100 metre freestyle event at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Early life Marguerite Dockrell was born on 10 March 1912 in Blackrock, County Dublin. Marguerite and the rest of the Dockrell family lived at Danvers House. Which was previously owned by a flower arranger and cookery expert Constance Spry. She mentions the house in her memoirs. She attended Alexandra college like both her mother and grandmother Lady Margaret Dockrell. Family life Dockrell was the third child of Henry Morgan Dockrell and Alice Evelyn Dockrell. The women's 100 metre freestyle was a swimming event held as part of the swimming at the 1928 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fourth appearance of the event, which was established in 1912. The 1928 Summer Olympics ( nl, Olympische Zomerspelen 1928), officially known as the Games of the IX Olympiad ( nl, Spelen van de IXe Olympiade) and commonly known as Amsterdam 1928, was an international multi-sport event that was celebrated from 28 July to 12 August 1928 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The city of Amsterdam had previously bid for the 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games, but was obliged to give way to war-torn Antwerp in Belgium for the 1920 Games and Pierre de Coubertin's Paris for the 1924 Games. The only other candidate city for the 1928 Olympics was Los Angeles, which would eventually be selected to host the Olympics four years later. Margaret Dockrell
Lady Margaret Dockrell (18 March 1849 – 29 June 1926) was an Irish suffragist, philanthropist, and councillor. Early life and family Margaret Dockrell was born Margaret Shannon on 18 March 1849, at 18 Charlotte Street, Dublin. She was the eldest child of solicitor George William Shannon and Emily Shannon (née Goodman). She had two sisters and two brothers. She attended Alexandra College, and later lectures for women at Trinity College Dublin. She married Maurice Edward Dockrell in July 1875. The couple had seven children, one daughter and six sons. Henry Morgan Dockrell (17 April 1880 – 26 October 1955) was an Irish Cumann na nGaedheal and Fine Gael politician who was elected to both Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann. Early life Dockrell was born on 17 April 1880 at the family home, 10 Waltham Terrace, Blackrock, Dublin. He was educated privately, and for a time at Trinity College Dublin (from 1898). He joined the family firm of Thomas Dockrell, Sons and Co. Ltd in 1900, becoming managing director and chairman on his father's death in 1929. Percy Dockrell
Henry Percy Dockrell (27 December 1914 – 22 November 1979) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served for twenty years as a Teachta Dála (TD). Dockrell first stood as a Fine Gael candidate for the Dún Laoghaire and Rathdown constituency at the 1948 general election. He was unsuccessful, but was elected at the 1951 general election, and was re-elected at the 1954 general election. He was defeated at the 1957 general election, but regained his seat at the 1961 general election and was re-elected a further three times for the same constituency. The constituency was divided for the 1977 general election. He stood as a candidate for Dún Laoghaire but was not elected. His father Henry Morgan Dockrell and his brother Maurice E. George Dockrell (22 October 1886 – 23 December 1924) was an Olympic swimmer, best known for competing at the 1908 Summer Olympics in the men's 100 metre freestyle event for Great Britain. He had a lengthy swimming, and military career, until his death in 1924.
