Margo Barton
Margo Barton is a New Zealand fashion designer, milliner and academic leader of the fashion design programme at Otago Polytechnic. In 2017 she took over the position of chair of the iD Dunedin Fashion Week organising committee. Early life Barton grew up in Dunedin, New Zealand. She learned how to use a sewing machine when she was 11 years old, and started to experiment with making garments, including outfits for her high school ball. She also modelled in department store fashion parades and for a modelling agency, and entered a Miss Otago contest in which she won third place. At the end of her second-to-last year of schooling her teachers recommended Barton study at secretarial college; Barton attended the college for only a week before returning to high school for her final year. On completing high school, Barton enrolled for a degree in home science at the University of Otago, although she withdrew after the first year. Otago Polytechnic
Otago Polytechnic was a public New Zealand tertiary education institute, centred in Dunedin with additional campuses in Cromwell and Auckland. Otago Polytechnic provided career-focused education and training, offering a range of New Zealand accredited postgraduate qualifications, degrees, diplomas and certificates at levels 2–10. In November 2022, it was formally merged into the new national mega polytechnic Te Pūkenga (the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology), ending its existence as an independent entity. iD Dunedin Fashion Week is an annual festival of fashion held in the New Zealand South Island city of Dunedin. The festival has been held regularly since 1999, and is held in the southern autumn in March or April. Description iD Dunedin is run by a not-for-profit charitable organisation, founded in 2000, in cooperation with Otago Polytechnic. Maysie Bestall-Cohen (born 1945) is a New Zealand retired model and modelling agent and the former organiser and presenter of the Benson & Hedges Fashion Design Awards. Early life Bestall-Cohen grew up in Dublin, Ireland, where her father was a children’s clothing manufacturer. When she was 16, the family moved to New Zealand and settled in Auckland. She attended secretarial college there, and was invited to join a modelling agency by two women she met a party, Winsome Goudie and Mary Bourne. ''Dolly'' (stylised in all-caps) was an Australian bimonthly teen magazine started in 1970 by Fairfax Ltd. in Australia and New Zealand, and purchased by ACP in 1988. The magazine became an online-only publication, and the print edition ceased, in December 2016. In June 2020, the magazine was purchased from the Bauer Media Group by Mercury Capital. ''Dolly'' was the basis and inspiration for ''Sassy Magazine'' (1987–1996) in the United States. Benson & Hedges Fashion Design Awards was a New Zealand fashion competition that ran from 1964 to 1998. It was the country's major competitive fashion event during this period. The Awards' open entry format offered an opportunity for new fashion designers and manufacturers to showcase their work on a national platform. Prominent New Zealand fashion designers showcased their works at this event including Annie Bonza, Trish Gregory, Denise L'Estrange-Corbet and Isabelle Harris.
