Margate, Tasmania
Margate is a small seaside town on the Channel Highway between North-West Bay and the Snug Tiers, south of Kingston in Tasmania, Australia. It is mostly in the Kingborough Council area, with about 4% in the Huon Valley Council LGA. Location and features At the 2006 census, Margate had a population of 1,368. Although more people live in the immediate region around the town. Margate is part of the Kingborough Council and is a frequent 'pit-stop' for those travelling south towards Snug, Kettering or Bruny Island. Vineyards, grazing fields and stands of trees surround the town and its approaches. The town itself has a range of shops, schools and religious buildings as well as several notable features including the Dru Point Bicentennial Park on the edge of North-West Bay. Kingborough Council
Kingborough Council is a local government body in Tasmania, and one of the five municipalities that constitutes the Greater Hobart Area. Kingborough is classified as an urban local government area and has a population of 37,734, it covers the transition from the southern urban areas of Hobart through Kingston, as well as encompassing Bruny Island. Etymology The origin of Kingborough Council is a simple derivation from the name of the main town. The name Kingston was suggested by Mr Lucas in 1851, and the area had been known as Brown's River before then. Why he suggested this name is unknown. Sandfly Colliery Tramway
The Sandfly Colliery Tramway (also known as the Kaoota Tramway) was a , narrow gauge tramway linking the Kaoota Mine to Margate, Tasmania. Constructed in 1905–06, the Tramway climbed above sea level and crossed ten bridges. After coal mining ceased the tramway was used to transport logs, fruit and passengers. The line was lifted and abandoned in 1922 after bushfires destroyed several bridges along the line. Currently, of the old track is used as cycling/walking tracks, while the remainder of the old line is on private property. History The narrow gauge steel tramway was built by the Sandfly Colliery Company in 1906. In 1904, of rail, one locomotive and 47 wagons were purchased from the contractors, Messrs. Nicolas Thomas Baudin (; 17 February 1754 – 16 September 1803) was a French explorer, cartographer, naturalist and hydrographer, most notable for his explorations in Australia and the southern Pacific. Antoine Raymond Joseph de Bruni, chevalier d'Entrecasteaux () (8 November 1737 – 21 July 1793) was a French naval officer, explorer and colonial governor. He is perhaps best known for his exploration of the Australian coast in 1792, while searching for the La Pérouse expedition. Antoine Bruni d'Entrecasteaux is commonly referred to simply as Bruni d'Entrecasteaux or Bruny d'Entrecasteaux, which is a compound surname (derived from his father's surname, Bruni and the family's origins in Entrecasteaux). D'Entrecasteaux Channel
The D'Entrecasteaux Channel is a body of water located between Bruny Island and the south-east of the mainland of Tasmania, Australia. The channel is the mouth for the estuaries of the Derwent and the Huon Rivers and empties into the Tasman Sea of the South Pacific Ocean. It was sighted by Abel Tasman in 1642 and surveyed in 1792 by Bruni d'Entrecasteaux. Margate Train
The Margate Train is a tourist attraction and shopping area located adjacent to the Channel Highway in Margate, Tasmania, and includes a number of shops and outlets housed within former Tasmanian Government Railways rolling stock. It is located approximately 18 kilometres from Hobart. Train The Margate Train site consists of a plinthed steam locomotive, carriages, and two sheds. The locomotive is MA3, a Tasmanian Government Railways MA Class from 1952. The carriages consist of Articulated Country Saloon (ACS) carriage #1, an SS class suburban carriage, and a TGR DP Class railmotor. Following the cessation of passenger rail transport in Tasmania, the vehicles were sold to private buyers. The train was originally a roadside park, and was retained in original red livery.
