Margaret Thorp
Margaret Sturge Thorp (12 June 1892 – 5 May 1978), also known as "The Peace Angel", was a peace activist and labour activist active in Australia in the 20th century. A Quaker, her religious beliefs guided her to a life of advocating for a variety of pacifist and feminist causes. Early life Thorp was born in Liverpool in 1892, the second youngest of the five children of Dr. James Herbert Thorp, and his wife Annie. The family lived in a middle-class area not far from the slums of Liverpool, where the young Thorp would hear the sounds of "noise, shrieks, and drunken brawls" at night. Dr Thorp worked as a physician at the Richmond Road Medical Mission in the slums, and during her teenage years Margaret would often accompany her father to the mission where she would conduct discussions. Brisbane School Of Arts
Brisbane School of Arts is a heritage-listed school of arts at 166 Ann Street, Brisbane City, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1865 to 1985. It is also known as former Servants Home. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History This building was erected in 1865-66. Known as the Servants Home, it provided accommodation for single adult females who had migrated to Queensland and were awaiting employment as domestic servants. Designed by H Edwin Bridges, the building comprised a ground floor and two upper galleries. All four elevations were identical. A notable feature of the interior was the lantern above the void in the two upper floors which provided natural lighting to the building. Conscription Disturbance At The Brisbane School Of Arts
On 9 July 1917, a disturbance broke out at the Brisbane School of Arts, when a meeting of the Women's Compulsory Service Petition League was interrupted by activists from the Women's Peace Army, with the confrontation degenerating into violence and mayhem. Background A plebiscite was held in 1916 in Australia to introduce conscription in order to bolster recruitment rates for the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), which was deployed in Europe fighting in the Great War. The plebiscite was narrowly defeated, but with the war still raging in Europe the question of conscription remained a live one. When Prime Minister Billy Hughes was decisively re-elected at the 1917 general election, proposing to hold a second plebiscite on the question of conscription, tensions began to flare in the community between supporters and opponents. Emma Miller
Emma Miller (26 June 1839 – 22 January 1917) was an English-born Australian pioneer trade union organiser, suffragist, and key figure in organisations which led to the founding of the Australian Labor Party in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Early life Miller was born on 26 June 1839 in Chesterfield, England, the eldest of four children born to Martha Holmes, née Hollingworth, and her husband Daniel. Her parents had strong Unitarian beliefs and were active in the Chartist movement. At the age of 18 she eloped and married a bookkeeper, Jabez Mycroft Silcock. They had four children together; however, Silcock died and Miller took up sewing to support the family. In 1874 Miller married William Calderwood, and they migrated with Miller's children to Queensland, arriving in 1879. Calderwood died in 1880, and Miller married Andrew Miller in Brisbane in 1886. Cecilia Annie John (5 November 187728 May 1955) was an Australian social activist, radical, and peace campaigner. Early life John was born on 5 November 1877 in Hobart, Tasmania to parents who were immigrants from Wales. She left her parents' home while young and moved to Melbourne to study music. She was a contralto and performed with the Metropolitan Liedertafel, the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Society, and the German Opera Company. John also became an expert in the field of raising poultry, having started her own poultry farm at Deepdene in order to finance her musical education. Career Joining the Collins Street Independent Church, John became interested in social questions and adopted feminist and anti-conscriptionist views that were quite radical for the time. Adela Constantia Mary Walsh ( Pankhurst; 19 June 1885 – 23 May 1961) was a British born suffragette who worked as a political organiser for the WSPU in Scotland. In 1914 she moved to Australia where she continued her activism and was co-founder of both the Communist Party of Australia and the Australia First Movement together with her husband, Tom Walsh.
