Countess Margarethe von Hanau-Lichtenberg, known upon her marriage as Margarethe, Countess of Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein (15 May 1463 – 26 May 1504) was a German noblewoman who, as the wife of Adolf III of Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein, was the Countess of Nassau-Wiesbaden and Nassau-Idstein. Biography Margarethe was the daughter of Philipp I, Count of Hanau-Lichtenberg and Anna von Lichtenberg. Her father ruled over the county of Hanau-Lichtenberg and, after the death of her maternal grandfather, the Lordship of Lichtenberg. She was a younger sister of Philipp II, Count of Hanau-Lichtenberg. On 20 June 1484 she married Adolf III, Count of Nassau-Wiesbaden. House Of Nassau
The House of Nassau is a diversified aristocratic dynasty in Europe. It is named after the lordship associated with Nassau Castle, located in present-day Nassau, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The lords of Nassau were originally titled "Count of Nassau", then elevated to the princely class as "Princely Counts". Early on they divided into two main branches: the elder (Walramian) branch, that gave rise to the German king Adolf, and the younger (Ottonian) branch, that gave rise to the Princes of Orange and the monarchs of the Netherlands. Philipp I, Count of Hanau-Lichtenberg (also known as ''Philipp the Elder''; born: 8 November 1417 at Windecken Castle in Windecken, now part of Nidderau; died: 10 May 1480 in Ingweiler, now called: Ingwiller) was Count of Hanau. The county was divided between him and his nephew, Count Philipp I "the Younger". Philipp the Elder's part of the county was later called Hanau-Lichtenberg; Philipp the Younger's part is known as Hanau-Münzenberg. Count Adolf III of Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein (by a different way of counting: ''Adolf IV''; 10 November 1443 – 6 July 1511) was a son of Count John II of Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein and his wife Mary of Nassau-Siegen (1418–1472). After his father's death in 1480, he ruled Nassau-Wiesbaden and his brother Philip ruled Nassau-Idstein. After Philip's childless death in 1509, Adolf III ruled also ruled Nassau-Idstein. Adolf served in the army of the Habsburg Duke consort and later Emperor Maximilian I and participated in the conquest of the Duchy of Gelre in 1478. The County of Hanau-Lichtenberg was a territory in the Holy Roman Empire. It emerged between 1456 and 1480 from a part of the County of Hanau and one half of the Barony of Lichtenberg. Following the extinction of the counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg in 1736 it went to Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, Hesse-Darmstadt, minor parts of it to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, Hesse-Cassel. Its centre was in the lower Alsace, the capital first Babenhausen, Hesse, Babenhausen, later Bouxwiller, Bas-Rhin, Buchsweiler. Philipp II of Hanau-Lichtenberg (born 31 May 1462 in Hanau; died: 22 August 1504 in Babenhausen) ruled the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg from 1480 until his death. Early life Philipp II was born on 31 May 1462 between 21:00 and 22:00, as the second son of the Count Philipp I, the Elder of Hanau-Babenhausen and his wife, Anna of Lichtenberg. He was baptized three days after the birth, in the St. Mary's Church in Hanau. His godparents were Konrad Brelle, abbot of Selbold Abbey, Wenceslaus of Cleves and Meze of Gemmingen, the widow of Eber-hard Waißen.
