Margaret Kemarre Turner
Margaret Kemarre Turner, also known as M K Turner, (born 1938 - ) is an Arrernte people, Arrernte woman, who belongs to the Akarre language, Akarre people and she is an elder in her community, interpreter, artist and author. She has also being involved with the Institute for Aboriginal Development in Alice Springs where she has taught language, culture and cross-cultural courses. Early life Turner was born nearby the Spotted Tiger Bore of Harts Range, Northern Territory, Harts Range, approximately. 215 km north-east of Alice Springs, until her family was moved off the land due to an influx of miners and the creation of a large army base during World War II. Arrernte People
The Arrernte () people, sometimes referred to as the Aranda, Arunta or Arrarnta, are a group of Aboriginal Australian peoples who live in the Arrernte lands, at ''Mparntwe'' (Alice Springs) and surrounding areas of the Central Australia region of the Northern Territory. Many still speak one of the various Arrernte dialects. Some Arrernte live in other areas far from their homeland, including the major Australian cities and overseas. Akarre Language
Arrernte or Aranda (; ) or sometimes referred to as Upper Arrernte (Upper Aranda), is a dialect cluster in the Arandic language group spoken in parts of the Northern Territory, Australia, by the Arrernte people. Other spelling variations are Arunta or Arrarnta, and all of the dialects have multiple other names. There are about 1,800 speakers of Eastern/Central Arrernte, making this dialect one of the widest spoken of any Indigenous language in Australia, the one usually referred to as Arrernte and the one described in detail below. It is spoken in the Alice Springs area and taught in schools and universities, heard in media and used in local government. The second biggest dialect in the group is Alyawarre. Some of the other dialects are spoken by very few people, leading to efforts to revive their usage; others are now completely extinct. Ltyentye Apurte Community
The Ltyentye Apurte Community, also known as Santa Teresa, is an Arrernte people, Arrernte Indigenous Australians, indigenous community in the Northern Territory, Australia, located about south-east of Alice Springs. History The mission run by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart at Arltunga was moved to Santa Teresa in 1953. It included a Mission school and dormitories which accommodated Aboriginal children aged 5 to 17 years. Hospital care was provided. Thomas Sidney Dixon, Father Thomas Dixon was responsible for the church. In 1976, administration was passed from the Mission to an Aboriginal land trust and the community was renamed Ltyentye Apurte. Although the residential section of the Mission school was closed in the same year, the day school remains operational and in the hands of the church.
