Margaret C. Johnson is a Canadian Progressive Conservative politician who has represented Carleton-Victoria in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick since 2020. Political career Johnson defeated incumbent Liberal MLA Andrew Harvey in 2020. Johnson had previously lost to Harvey in the 2018 provincial election. The Executive Council of New Brunswick (french: Conseil exécutif du Nouveau-Brunswick), informally and more commonly, the Cabinet of New Brunswick (french: Cabinet du Nouveau-Brunswick), is the cabinet of the Canadian province of New Brunswick. The New Brunswick Liberal Association (french: Association libérale du Nouveau-Brunswick), more popularly known as the New Brunswick Liberal ''Party'' or Liberal Party of New Brunswick, is one of the two major provincial political parties in New Brunswick, Canada. The party descended from both the Confederation Party and the Anti-Confederation Party whose members split into left-wing and right-wing groups following the creation of Canada as a nation in 1867. The current political organization emerged in the 1880s to serve as an organization housing the supporters of Premier Andrew G. Blair and, later, federal Liberal Party of Canada leader Wilfrid Laurier. Today, the New Brunswick Liberal Party follows the centre-left tradition. 2020 New Brunswick General Election
The 2020 New Brunswick general election was held on September 14, 2020, to elect members of the 60th New Brunswick Legislature. The Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick, led by Blaine Higgs, won a majority government. The writs of election were issued by Lieutenant Governor Brenda Murphy on August 17, 2020, after a request was made by Premier Blaine Higgs to dissolve the legislature. The election was scheduled to take place on October 17, 2022, as determined by the fixed-date provisions of the ''Legislative Assembly Act'', which requires a general election to be held every four years on the third Monday in October. However, Premier Higgs called a snap election after negotiations failed with the other parties that would have avoided an election until the fixed date in 2022 or the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
