She was inducted into the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame in 2021. Biography Margaret Briggs Gregory was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the third child of Professor James Monroe Gregory and Fannie Emma Whiting Hagan. Her three brothers included Eugene Monroe, James Francis, and Thomas Montgomery. Hawkins' father inspired her career in education, and her first teaching job allowed her to work alongside her father at Bordentown School. Hawkins graduated from the preparatory department of Howard University, St. Augustine's University (North Carolina), St. Augustine College, and Boston University with a degree in history. The Fifteenth Amendment (Amendment XV) to the United States Constitution prohibits the federal government and each state from denying or abridging a citizen's right to vote "on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." The General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC), founded in 1890 during the Progressive Movement, is a federation of over 3,000 women's clubs in the United States which promote civic improvements through volunteer service. Many of its activities and service projects are done independently by local clubs through their communities or GFWC's national partnerships.
