Marcy Burstiner
Marcy Burstiner is a professor of journalism at CalPoly Humboldt. She authored the textbook ''Investigative Reporting: From Premise to Publication'', now in its second edition, published by Taylor Francis in 2018. From 2006 until 2017 she wrote a monthly column called "The Media Maven" on local media and First Amendment issues for the ''North Coast Journal'', an alternative newsweekly based in Eureka, California. She also helped to found the literary magazine ''Six Hens''. She also serves as the Educational News Director for the non-profit organization News Decoder. Burstiner first started teaching at CalPoly Humboldt as a lecturer and then was hired as a tenure-track professor in 2007. From 2004 to 2018 she taught a class on investigative reporting which would result in a student-produced story in the ''North Coast Journal''. Journalism is the production and distribution of reports on the interaction of events, facts, ideas, and people that are the "news of the day" and that informs society to at least some degree. The word, a noun, applies to the occupation (professional or not), the methods of gathering information, and the organizing literary styles. Journalistic media include print, television, radio, Internet, and, in the past, newsreels. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1920 "to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States". The ACLU works through litigation and lobbying, and has over 1,800,000 members as of July 2018, with an annual budget of over $300 million.
