Marcus Samuel, 1st Viscount Bearsted
Marcus Samuel, 1st Viscount Bearsted, (5 November 1853 – 17 January 1927), known as Sir Marcus Samuel between 1898 and 1921 and subsequently as The Lord Bearsted until 1925, was a Lord Mayor of London and the founder of the Shell Transport and Trading Company, which was later restructured including a Holland-based company commonly referred to as Royal Dutch Shell. Career Samuel was born into an Iraqi Jewish family from western Europe in Whitechapel, London. His father, also named Marcus Samuel, ran a successful import-export business, M. Samuel & Co., trading with the coalition in the Far East, which Marcus carried on with his brother, Samuel Samuel. M. Samuel & Co launched the first Japanese gold sterling loan issued in London in 1897, and was largely concerned in the introduction of Japanese municipal loans, and in the development of the coal trade in Japan. Marcus Samuel, 3rd Viscount Bearsted
Major Marcus Richard Samuel, 3rd Viscount Bearsted, (1 June 1909 – 15 October 1986) was a British peer and a director of a number of companies, including Lloyds Bank. Education and Army career Samuel was the son of Dorothy Montefiore (Micholls) and Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted. He was educated at Eton College before going up to New College, Oxford. He served in the Second World War with the Warwickshire Yeomanry eventually gaining the rank of Major before he was wounded in 1944. He received the Territorial Decoration (TD) in 1945. Later career Marcus Samuel succeeded to his father's titles in 1948. Lord Bearsted was appointed deputy lieutenant (DL) for Warwickshire in 1950. Lord Bearsted held several directorships including of Sun Alliance, Lloyds Bank and Hill Samuel Group. He made no speeches in the House of Lords. Marcus Francis Javier Samuel (6 November 1904 – 16 October 1997)"Marcus Samuel FRPSL, 1904-1997" by Gerald Davis in ''The London Philatelist'', Vol.106, No.1251, December 1997.Introduction to the catalogue of the sale of the Marcus Samuel Revenue Collection by Gerald Davis, Spink Auctions, London, 2005, p. 3. was a distinguished British philatelist who was an expert on the specimen stamps and revenue stamps of Britain and the British Commonwealth. He was a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society London. Early life Samuel began collecting specimen stamps in 1924 when his father acquired a collection which contained many specimens. He was allowed to keep the specimens in return for removing the other stamps from the album. He subsequently formed a comprehensive collection of specimen stamps at a time when few other collectors were interested in them.
