Marco Island Airways
Marco Island Airways is a defunct airline based in Miami, Florida, United States. History Marco Island Airways was formed in 1972 and commenced scheduled flights in 1973 from Miami International Airport, with a maintenance base at Opa Locka Airport on the western outskirts of Miami. Initial scheduled services were flown between Miami and Marco Island on Florida's Gulf Coast. Services were added to Tampa in 1980 and to Lakeland, Florida in 1981. The airline also operated contract flights, as Air Florida Commuter, but retaining the Marco Island color scheme, in the early 1980s with service to Key West and the Bahamas. The airline was acquired by Provincetown-Boston Airline (PBA) in 1984 and its operations were fully merged into PBA during June 1986. The Beechcraft Model 99 is a civilian aircraft produced by Beechcraft. It is also known as the Beech 99 Airliner and the Commuter 99. The 99 is a twin-engine, unpressurized, 15 to 17 passenger seat turboprop aircraft, derived from the earlier Beechcraft King Air and Queen Air. It uses the wings of the Queen Air, the engines and nacelles of the King Air, and sub-systems from both, with a specifically designed nose structure. The Martin 4-0-4 was an American pressurized passenger airliner built by the Glenn L. Martin Company. In addition to airline use initially in the United States, it was used by the United States Coast Guard and United States Navy as the RM-1G (later as the VC-3A). Design and development When production of the earlier Martin 2-0-2 was stopped due to problems with wing structural failure the company decided to re-wing an improved version (which had already flown as the Martin 3-0-3). The new aircraft was the Martin 4-0-4. It had structural changes to the wings, pressurization and was lengthened slightly to take 40 passengers. Provincetown-Boston Airlines was an airline that operated between 1949 and 1989. The airline operated a route network in New England, New York, Pennsylvania, and Florida, and at one time was the largest commuter airline in the United States before its purchase by People Express Airlines and then eventual consolidation with other commuter airlines into Continental Express, now United Express after the merger of Continental Airlines and United Airlines.
