Luc Marchal
Colonel Luc Marchal is a retired officer of the armed forces of Belgium. He is known for being the senior officer in the Belgian peacekeeping contingent during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, as well as the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) sector commander for the capital Kigali. Background Marchal had, by 1994, accumulated thirty years of experience in the Belgian military, fifteen of them as a paracommando. Before his Rwanda assignment, he had been chief of staff to the Minister of Defense. Marchal had five years of experience working in Zaire, and his United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) commander, Canadian Lieutenant General Roméo Dallaire, praised him, stating, "Luc carried no colonial baggage" and that he "had a special knack for working with troops from less sophisticated armies." Henri Marchal
Henri Marchal (June 24, 1876 – April 10, 1970) was a French architect and civil servant. He devoted a great part of his life to research on the art and archeology of Cambodia and the conservation and restoration of Khmer architecture, Khmer monuments at the archeological site of Angkor, in Cambodia. Marchal was born in Paris. After his baccalauréat in 1895, he was admitted to the ''École des beaux-arts'', section of Architecture, where he attended the workshop led by Gaston Redon. He was appointed Inspector of civilian buildings of Cambodia in 1905. In 1910 he gained the Khmer language license and was appointed assistant curator of the ''Ecole française d'Extrême-Orient'' (EFEO) Museum in Phnom Penh. In 1912 he was dispatched to Saigon, as Inspector of civilian buildings of Cochinchina. Gilles Marchal (2 September 1944 – 11 April 2013), born Gilles Pastre, was a French songwriter and singer who reached the height of his career during the 1970s. Life Discovered by Georges Chatelain, his producer, who signed (with Jack Robinson as a co-producer) a contract with ''Disc' AZ'' and Lucien Morisse, who was then the program director at Europe 1. Most of his repertoire was original, but at the beginning of his career he performed a few interesting covers of songs by Lee Hazlewood and Fred Neil. "Summer Wine", for example, which Lee Hazlewood originally sang with Nancy Sinatra, was covered by Marchal in 1969 in a duet with Martine Habib, a young singer whom he met at CBE Studios and whose voice is reminiscent of Joan Baez. Élie Marchal (1 March 1839, in Wasigny – 19 February 1923, in Gembloux) was a Belgian botanist and mycologist. From 1861 to 1871, he was a middle-school teacher in the communities of Virton, Ath, Visé and Maeseyck. From 1871 to 1879 he was associated with research done at the '' Jardin botanique des Bruxelles''. Additionally, from 1872 until 1899, he worked as a lecturer at various horticultural and teacher schools. Sylvain Marchal (born 10 February 1980) is a French former professional footballer who played as a defender. Career Marchal began his career at FC Metz, making his Ligue 1 debut on 10 March 1999 in the 0–0 draw at AS Monaco. It was in the latter half of the 2001–02 season that he established himself as a regular in the Metz lineup, but fell out of favour by August 2004, when he was loaned out to Ligue 2 club LB Châteauroux. A year later he returned to Metz to start in the first two matches of the 2005–06 season, but then transferred to FC Lorient in Ligue 2. Born Georges Louis Lucot in Nancy, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France, the strikingly handsome Marchal was discovered in the early-1940s by director Jean Grémillon. By the early 1950s, he had become one of the top male stars of French cinema, second only, perhaps, to actor Jean Marais. Jules Marchal (1924 - 21 June 2003) was a Belgian diplomat and historian, who wrote extensively on the history of colonial exploitation in the Belgian Congo. Originally writing in Dutch, under the pseudonym A. M. Delathuy, he later published studies in French under his own name. Adam Hochschild, in his bestselling '' King Leopold's Ghost'', praised Marchal's work as "the best scholarly overview by far, encyclopedic in scope". Morvan Marchal (31 July 1900, Vitr̩, Ille-et-Vilaine Р13 August 1963, Paris), is the Breton name of Maurice Marchal, an architect and a militant Breton nationalist. He is best known for having designed the national flag of Brittany. Biography A former pupil of the Saint Martin's day college of Rennes, Marchal went on to study architecture at the Rennes School of Art. In 1918 he joined the Breton Regionalist Union and became involved with its journal Breiz Atao ("Brittany Always!") and the nationalist youth movement Breton Youth. André Louis Marchal (6 February 1894 – 27 August 1980) was a French organist and organ teacher. He was one of the great initiators of the twentieth-century organ revival in France and one of the cofounders of the ''Association des amis de l'orgue'' alongside Norbert Dufourcq. Biography Marchal was born blind in Paris. Remarkably undaunted by this handicap, he studied the organ under Eugène Gigout at the Paris Conservatoire; and there, in 1913, he won the First Prize in organ-playing. Four years later he also won the ''prix d'excellence'' for fugue and counterpoint. Marchal concertized widely, both in France and abroad. He played a series of recitals at the Cleveland Museum of Art in late 1947 and early 1948.
