Marcelo Antônio Guedes Filho (born 20 May 1987), commonly known as Marcelo, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Australian club Western Sydney Wanderers. Career Santos Born in São Vicente, Marcelo began his career at Santos, making his first team debut in the 2007 season. He won the Campeonato Paulista with the club that season. He also helped his team qualify to Copa Libertadores semifinals in the 2007 season as well as to quarterfinals in the following campaign. Marcelo made 65 appearances for Santos in all competitions before his contract expired at the end of August 2008. Wisła Kraków Marcelo subsequently signed a five-year contract with Polish Ekstraklasa champions Wisła Kraków on 1 September 2008. However, his former club Santos refused to issue his certificate stating that Marcelo has a contract with them until 2011. Poland Ekstraklasa (), meaning "Extra Class" in Polish, named PKO Ekstraklasa since the 2019–20 season due to its sponsorship by PKO Bank Polski, is the top Polish professional league for men's association football teams. The 2009–10 Ekstraklasa was the 76th season since its establishment as the highest football league of Poland. It began on 31 July 2009 and ended on 15 May 2010. The champions were Lech Poznań. Teams Due to several non-competitive events between last and this season, the team exchange among the two highest football divisions of Poland was only partially determined by the 2008–09 league tables. ŁKS Łódź were denied a license by the Polish FA because of financial issues. ŁKS filed several appeals against this decision, but were eventually left without any success. 2008 Santos FC Season
The 2008 season was Santos Futebol Clube's ninety-sixth in existence and the club's forty-ninth consecutive season in the top flight of Brazilian football. On 15 December 2007, Santos appointed Emerson Leão to coach the team for the third time. This was after the dismissal of Vanderlei Luxemburgo at the end of 2007 season. Later, Leão was fired due to bad results and for his place Cuca was signed. Cuca also didn't get good results and was fired on 7 August, replaced by Márcio Fernandes, who assumed the team as caretaker until the end of season. Unlike the last two seasons, Santos did not get the Campeonato Paulista title, reaching the 7th position. Their Campeonato Brasileiro campaign was the worst of history, where they were almost relegated, ending in the 15th position, out of 20 teams.
