The title Duke and Prince of Paliano is borne by the head of the elder line of the Colonna family. At times the honour has been borne by several members at once. Pope Paul IV
Pope Paul IV, born Gian Pietro Carafa, C.R. ( la, Paulus IV; it, Paolo IV; 28 June 1476 – 18 August 1559) was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 23 May 1555 to his death in August 1559. While serving as papal nuncio in Spain, he developed an anti-Spanish outlook that later coloured his papacy. In response to an invasion of part of the Papal States by Spain during his papacy, he called for a French military intervention. After a defeat of the French and with Spanish troops at the edge of Rome, the Papacy and Spain reached a compromise: French and Spanish forces left the Papal States and the Pope thereafter adopted a neutral stance between France and Spain. Carafa was appointed bishop of Chieti, but resigned in 1524 in order to found with St. Cajetan the Congregation of Clerics Regular (Theatines). Filippo II Colonna (7 April 1663 – 8 November 1714) was an Italian nobleman of prominent Colonna family. He was the 9th Duke and Prince of Paliano. Biography Born in Rome, Filippo was the son of Don Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna, hereditary Grand Constable of the Kingdom of Naples, and Maria Mancini, a niece of Cardinal Mazarin. The Spanish had ruled Naples since the early sixteenth century, and the Colonna were prominent servants of the Spanish crown in Italy. In 1687, while his father served as head of the interregnum council of Naples, Filippo was appointed commander of a company of lancers. In 1689 he succeeded his father as Grand Constable and Duke-Prince of Paliano. As a patron of the arts, Filippo had the art gallery in the family's Roman palazzo refurbished. Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna (1637–1689) was an Italian nobleman of the Colonna family. He was the 8th Duke and Prince of Paliano and hereditary Grand Constable of the Kingdom of Naples. He was also a Knight of the Golden Fleece. Biography Colonna was born in Rome, the son of Marcantonio V Colonna, Prince of Paliano and Isabella Gioeni Cardona, Princess of Castiglione. He was the nephew of Anna Colonna who married Taddeo Barberini, Prince of Palestrina. He was inducted into the ''Order of the Golden Fleece'' in the same year as his cousin, Maffeo Barberini. In 1661 he married Maria Mancini, a niece of Cardinal Mazarin. She was the first love of Louis XIV whose desire to marry her caused his mother, Anne of Austria, and Maria's uncle intense concern. Filippo I Colonna
Filippo Colonna (1578 – 11 April 1639), Prince of Paliano, was an Italian nobleman, who was the head of the Colonna family of Rome and the hereditary Gran Connestabile at the court of Naples. Biography He was born in Rome. A nephew of Carlo Borromeo and grand nephew of Gian Giacomo Medici, he married Lucrezia Tomacelli, of the Lords of Galatro (1576–1622) in 1597. His rebuilding of Palazzo Colonna began the process of creating a unified structure of the assortment of medieval buildings. He realized the monumental garden entrance on Monte Cavallo. In 1639, he walked down a well known path by his home, and promptly died by slipping on a stone of sorts and splitting open his head on the rocks. At his death it was revealed that he had appointed his second son, Girolamo, to be his heir, thus starting a war of succession between the eldest son, Federico, and Girolamo.
