Marc Pachter
Marc Pachter (born 1942 or 1943) is an American museum director who headed up the United States National Portrait Gallery from 2000 until 2007 and was the acting director (after coming back out of retirement) of the National Museum of American History between 2011 and 2012, both at the Smithsonian. While at the NPG Pachter played an instrumental role in acquiring the Lansdowne portrait for the museum. When he retired as director of the National Portrait Gallery in 2007, in turn the Gallery commissioned a portrait by Robert Liberace of him. Pachter gave a talk entitled "The Art of the Interview" at the EG conference in January 2008; a video of the talk is posted on the TED website. National Portrait Gallery (United States)
The National Portrait Gallery is a historic art museum between 7th, 9th, F, and G Streets NW in Washington, D.C., in the United States. Founded in 1962 and opened to the public in 1968, it is part of the Smithsonian Institution. Its collections focus on images of famous Americans. Lansdowne Portrait
The Lansdowne portrait is an iconic life-size portrait of George Washington painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1796. It depicts the 64-year-old President of the United States during his final year in office. The portrait was a gift to former British Prime Minister William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, and spent more than 170 years in England. Stuart painted three copies of the Lansdowne, and five portraits that were closely related to it. His most famous copy has hung in the East Room of the White House since 1800. Numerous other artists also painted copies. In 2001, to preclude the original portrait's possible sale at auction, the National Portrait Gallery (United States), National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. purchased it for $20,000,000. Robert Liberace
Robert Liberace (born January 2, 1967, in Pomona, New York) is an American realist artist. He attended the George Washington University, from which he received both his bachelor of liberal arts and masters of fine arts degrees. There he was also a recipient of a Morris Louis scholarship. Among his teachers was the painter Frank Wright, who he credits with having instilled into him a love of the old masters.
