Marburg State School
Marburg State School is a heritage-listed state school at Louisa Street, Marburg, Queensland, Marburg, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Queensland Department of Public Works and built in 1922. It is also known as Marburg Rural School. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 9 October 2015. History Marburg State School opened in 1879 as Frederick State School (renamed Marburg State School in 1888) on a small site within the small agricultural settlement of Frederick, to serve its growing rural population. In February 1920, Marburg Rural School commenced in rented buildings until the rural school and primary school moved to the current school site in June 1922. The school has been in continuous operation since establishment and has been a focus for the local community as a place for important social and cultural activity. Marburg is a rural town in the City of Ipswich and a locality split between the City of Ipswich and the Somerset Region, both in Queensland, Australia. In the , Marburg had a population of 873 people. Geography Marburg is located approximately 50 km west-south-west from Brisbane city. The land has an elevation of between approximately 80 and 120 metres above sea level. A small creek, the Black Snake creek, runs through Marburg. It is named after the Red-bellied Black Snake. Haigslea is a locality split between the City of Ipswich and the Somerset Region in South East Queensland, Australia. In the , Haigslea had a population of 468 people. History The area was originally called ''Kirchheim'' by the many German people who settled there as immigrants between 1865 and 1873. It was renamed ''Haigslea'' due to anti-German sentiment during the First World War. The locality is named after General Douglas Haig. He served in India in 1887. He was appointed as the regiment's adjutant in 1888, and appointed as Commander-in-chief of the British Army in France from 1915 to 1918. On 9 July 1873, St Paul's Lutheran church was dedicated by Pastor C. Baustadt. A manse was built beside the church in 1874. The manse was replaced with a new building in 1895 (this building was moved to Marburg in 1904). Geography Most of Tallegalla lies within the Lockyer Creek catchment area, but small portion exist in both the Brisbane River and Bremer River catchments.
