Marble Valley is a band formed by Steve West (musician), Steve West, the drummer of the indie rock band Pavement (band), Pavement. Marble Valley is an international collective of individuals moulded together by Steve West, Pavement (band), Pavement's drummer since ''Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain'', and with David Berman (musician), David Berman on the Silver Jews albums, ''Starlite Walker'' and ''Tanglewood Numbers''. ''Breakthrough'' is the band's 4th since 1997 and was conceived on 5 continents, in 17 different countries while touring the planet during Pavement's reunion tour in 2010. It was mostly recorded by Remko in his Amsterdam studio. Steve West (musician)
Stephen West (born December 8, 1966) is an American musician. From 1993 to 1999 he was the drummer for the indie rock band Pavement appearing on four of their studio albums. Since Pavement broke up, he has also become active as an artist in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Early life A native of Richmond, Virginia, West went to high school with future Pavement bandmate Bob Nastanovich; the two first met when West was fourteen years old. He then attended Virginia Commonwealth University, where he majored in art, before moving to New York City and working as a security guard at the Whitney Museum. One of his coworkers at the Whitney was Stephen Malkmus, another of his future bandmates in Pavement. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Pavement (band)
Pavement is an American indie rock band that formed in Stockton, California, in 1989. For most of their career, the group consisted of Stephen Malkmus (vocals and guitar), Scott Kannberg (guitar and vocals), Mark Ibold (bass), Steve West (drums) and Bob Nastanovich (percussion and vocals). Initially conceived as a recording project, the band at first avoided press or live performances, while attracting considerable underground attention with their early releases. Gradually evolving into a more polished band, Pavement recorded five full-length albums and ten EPs over the course of their decade-long career, though they disbanded with some acrimony in 1999 as the members moved on to other projects. In 2010, they undertook a well-received reunion tour, with another international tour currently ongoing in 2022 and 2023. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
''Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain'' is the second studio album by American indie rock band Pavement (band), Pavement, released on February 14, 1994 by Matador Records. The album saw the band move on towards a more accessible rock sound than that of their more lo-fi debut ''Slanted and Enchanted'' and achieve moderate success with the single "Cut Your Hair". The album also saw original drummer Gary Young (drummer), Gary Young replaced by Steve West (Pavement), Steve West. It was a UK Top 20 hit upon release, although it was not so successful in the US charts. Release ''Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain'' was released on February 14, 1994 by Matador Records. As of 2009, the album had sold about 500,000 copies. In 2004, Matador released ''Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain: LA's Desert Origins'', a compilation containing the album in its entirety, as well outtakes and other rarities from the same era. David Berman (musician)
David Cloud Berman (born David Craig Berman; January 4, 1967 – August 7, 2019) was an American musician, singer and poet. In 1989, he founded the indie rock band Silver Jews with Pavement's Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich, and he was its only constant member until its dissolution in 2009. Berman wrote Silver Jews' lyrics; further, with Malkmus, he developed the simple country-rock sound that characterized their early lo-fi recordings. His abstract and autobiographical lyrics, which he extensively labored over, were his creative priority. His only published volume of poetry, '' Actual Air'', appeared in 1999, by which time heroin and crack cocaine addictions loomed large. His struggle with substance abuse, depression and anxiety overcame his career, and he attempted suicide in 2003. Afterward, he underwent rehabilitation, and engaged with Judaism. Silver Jews
Silver Jews were an American indie rock band from New York City, formed in 1989 by David Berman alongside Pavement members Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. Berman was the only constant band member. During the last few albums, Cassie Berman became a regular member of the band. They disbanded in 2009.
