''Mapplethorpe'' is a 2018 American biographical drama film written and directed by Ondi Timoner about the life of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Shooting began on July 11, 2017 in New York and lasted only 19 days. It premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival. Premise The film depicts the life of Robert Mapplethorpe, a photographer who transformed taboo subjects like gay sex, Satanism, and bondage into beautiful black-and-white images. Ondi Doane Timoner is an American filmmaker and the founder and chief executive officer of Interloper Films, a full-service production company located in Pasadena, California. Timoner is a two-time recipient of the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize for her documentaries '' Dig!'' (2004) and ''We Live in Public'' (2009). Both films have been acquired by New York's Museum of Modern Art for their permanent collection. Holly Solomon (1934–2002) was an American collector of contemporary art and founder of the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York City in 1975.
