Mao Yuan
Mao Yuan (茅沅, 1926–October 10, 2022) was a Chinese composer. He was for many years one of the resident composers of the CNOH producing such works as the 1966 geju ''The Great Wall of the South Seas'', co-composed with Ma Fei. CNOH
The China National Opera House (CNOH) or China Central Opera (中央歌剧院) is a State-run opera company based in Beijing, China, and under the Chinese Ministry of Culture. CNOH consists of an opera troupe, a choir, a symphony orchestra and a stagecraft, costume and scenery departments. Geju
Chinese contemporary classical opera (Chinese: 当今古典歌剧; ''dāngjīn gŭdiăn gējù''; "contemporary classical opera") is a musical art form drawing on western opera traditions - distinct from modern developments of traditional Chinese opera. One of the first western-style operas was ''The White Haired Girl'' (1940). Chinese-language western-style opera is to be distinguished the Revolutionary operas of the Cultural Revolution such as ''Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy'' which were mainly an adaption of Peking opera with socialist text and subjects, with some influence from Soviet musical theatre. The 1950s-70s saw several patriotic socialist operas, such as ''Red Guards on Honghu Lake'' (1956). Modern operas with a continuation of "realist" socialist elements include ''A Village Teacher'' (2009). Houston Ballet, operated by Houston Ballet Foundation, is a professional ballet company based in Houston, Texas. The company, consisting of 59 dancers, produces over 85 performances per year. History Tatiana Semenova (1955–1967) Houston developed its style for professional ballet beginning in the 1930s, with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. For eleven years, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo spent a week during the Christmas season in Houston performing for Houston audiences. From this exposure grew a desire among patrons for a resident dance company. In the spring of 1955, Tatiana Semenova, a former dancer with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, was invited to start a ballet school in Houston. Semenova accepted, and a state charter was obtained to establish a Houston Foundation for Ballet on July 26, 1955.
