Manuel Pinto (footballer)
Manuel Campos Pinto (born 14 December 1938) is a Portuguese former footballer who played as central defender. Club career Born in Montijo, Setúbal District, Pinto started his professional career with S.L. Benfica. He was part of two Primeira Liga squads during his spell with the club, winning the 1960–61 edition but contributing only two matches to the feat. The following 12 seasons, Pinto represented Vitória S.C. also of the top division. On 10 September 1969, he was on the starting XI for their first-ever game in European competition, against FC Baník Ostrava in the first round of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. International career Pinto played twice with the Portugal national team over a one-month period. He earned his first cap on 6 April 1969, in a 0–0 friendly draw with Mexico. In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. The Taça de Portugal (; "Cup of Portugal") is an annual association football competition and the premier knockout tournament in Portuguese football. For sponsorship reasons, it has been known as Taça de Portugal Placard since the 2015–16 season. Custódio João Pinto (9 February 1942 – 21 February 2004) was a Portuguese Association football, footballer who played as a Midfielder#Central midfielder, central midfielder. Club career Born in Montijo (parish), Montijo, Setúbal District, Pinto made his senior debut with FC Porto, first appearing in the Primeira Liga at the age of 19. During his ten-year spell with the northerners he amassed competitive totals of 311 matches and 102 goals, but only won one trophy, the 1968 Taça de Portugal, Portuguese Cup. In the summer of 1971, Pinto signed with Minho Province, Minho club Vitória S.C., Vitória de Guimarães, where he would play four seasons (always in the top flight).
