Manuel Dos Santos 'Manecas'
Colonel Manuel dos Santos, also known as 'Comandante Manecas', is a Bissau-Guinean politician from PAIGC. He was born as Manuel Maria Monteiro Santos in São Vicente, Cape Verde, on 30 October 1942. He was recruited in 1957 as a member of PAIGC. He was trained in military academies in Cuba and USSR, and became artillery commander in the war for independence. He led the group of guerrillas who used Strella anti-aircraft missiles against the Portuguese aircraft. In the independent Guinea-Bissau, Manecas served in different governmental positions including minister of transport and tourism in 1978 and minister of information and telecommunication, minister of social infrastructure, minister of the economy and finance, and minister of natural resources and industry. Manuel dos Santos Fernandes (born 28 March 1974), known as Dos Santos, is a former professional footballer who played as a left back. Born in Cape Verde, Dos Santos represented France internationally. Football career Born in Praia, Cape Verde one year before the nation gained independence from Portugal, Dos Santos migrated to France at a very young age, and started his professional career at AS Monaco FC. He then played for Montpellier HSC and Olympique de Marseille, spending four Ligue 1 seasons with the latter: with ''L'OM'', he appeared in nine complete matches in the 2003–04 UEFA Cup, including the 0–2 final loss against Valencia CF which would be his last match for the club. Manoel dos Santos Júnior (born 22 February 1939) is a former Brazilian swimmer, former world record holder and a bronze medalist in 100-metre freestyle at the 1960 Summer Olympics, Olympic Games in Rome in 1960. Early life At 4 years of age, Manoel spent months in a hospital, recovering from recurrent threats of pneumonia and similar diseases, that his body suffered. His father saw in swimming the salvation of that drama. Before completing eleven years old, in early 1950, Manoel was studying in Rio Claro, in the Gymnasium Koelle, a German college. The boy found himself away from his family, which he saw only on holidays and "holy week", when he took the train to the western state. There in Rio Claro, the rigid routine of the college, Manoel fits well with the swimming program.
