Manuel Ciavatta
Manuel Ciavatta (born 27 December 1976) is a Sammarinese politician who is one of two Captains Regent (heads of government for San Marino) in office from 1 October 2022. He is serving alongside Maria Luisa Berti. Biography Ciavatta has a degree in civil engineering from the University of Bologna, but also a bachelor's degree in Sacred Theology. He is a member of the Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party, where he serves as deputy political secretary. Captains Regent
The Captains Regent (Italian: ''Capitani reggenti'') are the two heads of state of the Republic of San Marino. They are elected every six months by the Grand and General Council, the country's legislative body. Normally the Regents are chosen from opposing parties and they serve a six-month term. The investiture of the captains regent takes place on 1 April and 1 October every year. This tradition dates back at least to 1243. The practice of dual heads of government (diarchy) is derived directly from the customs of the Roman Republic, equivalent to the consuls of ancient Rome. History The establishment of the regency took place during the first half of the 13th century, when they had the role of managing justice, a task similar to competence of magistrates. Maria Luisa Berti (born 6 October 1971) is a San Marino, Sammarinese politician who is one of two Captains Regent (heads of government for San Marino) in office from 1 October 2022. Serving alongside Manuel Ciavatta, it is her second term in office. Eleven years prior, she was in the same post for the April to October 2011 political term. Oscar Mina
Oscar Mina (born 24 September 1958) is a Sanmarinese politician, who served as Captain Regent of San Marino with Paolo Rondelli from 1 April to 1 October 2022. He previously served as Captain Regent from 1 April 2009 to October 2009 together with Massimo Cenci. Mina was elected to the Grand and General Council as a member of the Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party in 2006. Life In 1979, Oscar Mina graduated in electrical engineering and subsequently studied political science at the University of Urbino. Since 1979, he is a civil servant in San Marino's water and gas supply. Mina is single and lives in Serravalle. Politics Mina joined the Christian Democratic PDCS in 1998. Paolo Rondelli (born 17 June 1963) is a Sammarinese politician and diplomat who served as Captain Regent of San Marino alongside Oscar Mina from 1 April to 1 October 2022. Career Born in San Marino on 17 June 1963, Rondelli studied chemical engineering at the University of Bologna and graduated in 1990 with a thesis on "Risks associated with the transport of toxic substances". In 1994 and 1995, he studied environmental science and technology, also at the University of Bologna. In May 2010, Rondelli obtained a Master's in Journalism from a programme run by the Universities of Urbino and Tor Vergata in Rome. In the same year, Rondelli graduated from the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Bologna with a thesis entitled "Democracies in transition: state of young and old, heritage of the future". Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party
The Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party ( it, Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese, PDCS) is a Christian-democratic political party in San Marino. The PDCS is an observer member of the European People's Party (EPP), having joined the EPP in 1993. Its Italian counterpart was the now-dissolved Christian Democracy. Its internal left-wing faction left in 2006 to form the Centre Democrats and was joined by the social democrats of Arengo and Freedom. It is led by Giovanni Lonfernini, a former Captain-Regent. In the 2006 general election PDCS won the 32.9% of the vote and 21 out of 60 seats in the Grand and General Council. The party stood in opposition to the 2006-2008 governing political coalition of Party of Socialists and Democrats, Popular Alliance and United Left.
