Manuel Becerra (settler)
Manuel Becerra (1762 – ) was a Tejano settler and politician in Texas. In the 1820s, he served as the first secretary of the town of La Bahia (today Goliad, Texas) and accompanied Stephen F. Austin's travel to the Colorado River to find a place for a colony. In 1827, he served as ''síndico'' ( civil judge or syndic) in Martín De León's Guadalupe colony and helped negotiate a treaty with the Karankawa tribe. In 1832, Becerra received a land grant of from the Mexican Government in what is now Refugio County. Tejano
Tejanos (, ; singular: ''Tejano/a''; Spanish for "Texan", originally borrowed from the Caddo ''tayshas'') are the residents of the state of Texas who are culturally descended from the Mexican population of Tejas and Coahuila that lived in the region prior to it becoming what is now known as the state of Texas before it became a U.S. state in 1845. The term is also sometimes applied to all Texans of Mexican descent. The original word Tejano, with a "J" not an "X', comes from the indigenous Caddo people's language, from the word ''tayshas'', in which the word means "friend" or "ally", a title given to the indigenous population that moved northward by early Aztec and Spanish rulers and combined forces, including, but not limited to, the Lipan N'de Apache People, Coahuiltecas, and Huasteca indigenous people from Zacatecas. Karankawa People
The Karankawa were an Indigenous people concentrated in southern Texas along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, largely in the lower Colorado River and Brazos River valleys."Karankawa." They consisted of several independent seasonal nomadic groups who shared the same language and much of the same culture. From the onset of European colonization, the Karankawa had violent encounters with the Spanish. After one attack by the Spanish, who ambushed the Karankawa after the establishment of Presidio La Bahía in 1722, the Karankawa allegedly felt "deeply betrayed ndviewed Spanish colonial settlement with hostility." Presidio La Bahia
A presidio ( en, jail, fortification) was a fortified base established by the Spanish Empire around between 16th and 18th centuries in areas in condition of their control or influence. The presidios of Spanish Philippines in particular, were centers where the martial art of Arnis de Mano was developed from Spanish cut-and-thrust fencing style. The term is derived from the Latin word ''praesidium'' meaning ''protection'' or ''defense''. In the Mediterranean and the Philippines, the presidios were outposts of Christian defense against Islamic raids. In the Americas, the fortresses were built to protect against raid of pirates, rival colonists, as well as Native Americans. A land grant is a gift of real estate—land or its use privileges—made by a government or other authority as an incentive, means of enabling works, or as a reward for services to an individual, especially in return for military service. Martín De León
Martín De León (1765–1833) was a rancher and wealthy Mexican empresario in Texas who was descended from Spanish people, Spanish aristocracy. He was the patriarch of one of the prominent founding families of early Texas. De León and his wife Patricia de la Garza De León, Patricia de la Garza established De León's Colony (Texas), De León's Colony, the only predominantly Mexican colony in Texas. They founded the town of ''Villa de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Victoria Nombre de Jesús'' (now known as Victoria, Texas, Victoria) on the Guadalupe River (Texas), Guadalupe River.
