Manual High School (Denver)
Manual High School is located in the Whittier neighborhood on the east side of Denver, Colorado, United States. History Old East High School was completed in 1889, making it the oldest high school in Denver. It was located on Stout Street between 19th and 20th and was demolished in 1925. Manual High School was also one of the oldest high school in Denver, opening in 1892. The original building was located near the current one. Manual was also one of the first schools in Denver to educate African-Americans. During the 1970s and 1980s, the school had a diverse student body, a result of desegregation busing which began in 1970. Once a model of educational excellence and community, Manual High School fell on hard times after the school district ended bussing for integration in 1995. Test scores dropped and gang-related violence troubled the school and community. Only 20% of freshman were graduating. Ron Kellum
Ron Kellum (born February 1, 1965) is an American producer, director, artist and choreographer known for being a Broadway veteran and the first African-American artistic director for the award-winning Cirque du Soleil. He was the artistic director for the productions of ''Koozå'' from 2015 through 2016 and '' Volta'' from 2018 through 2020. Scott Horsley is an American radio journalist. He is the Chief Economics Correspondent for National Public Radio. Early life, family and education Horsley was raised in Denver, Colorado, graduating from its Manual High School. Tag Team is an American hip hop/pop rap duo residing in Atlanta, Georgia. They are best known for their 1993 single "Whoomp! (There It Is)", which appeared in a number of advertisements, films, and TV shows. The duo is made up of Cecil Glenn (DC the Brain Supreme) and Steve Gibson (Steve Rolln). Walt Conley
Walter Bell Conley (May 20, 1929 – November 16, 2003) was an American folk singer, Hollywood actor, voice actor, and owner of Denver's folk venue Conley's Nostalgia. The Rocky Mountain News described Conley as the founding father of Denver's folk scene, which began in the late 1950s and stretched into the mid-1960s. Conley shared stages with, and opened for, Josh White, Cisco Houston, Mama Cass Elliot, Floyd Red Crow Westerman, and Judy Collins, among many others. Conley also opened his home to a young and unknown Bob Dylan in the summer of 1960, and introduced Denver to the little-known Smothers Brothers that same year. Helen Marie Black (June 2, 1896 – January 31, 1988) was an American cultural and civic leader, journalist, and publicist. She was a co-founder of the Denver Symphony Orchestra and served as its business manager for more than 30 years, being the first female symphony manager in the United States.
