Mansfield Memorial Museum
The Mansfield Memorial Museum, originally Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, is in downtown Mansfield, Ohio. It was founded in 1887 and opened to the public in 1889 as the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall. The museum's collections include various exhibits including Native American artifacts, American Civil War memorabilia, and collections from Asia and Africa. The museum originally housed a library and theater. Oscar Cobb of Chicago designed the building. The building was built by noted architect F.F. Schnitzer, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Grand Army of the Republic has space upstairs in the building. Mansfield, Ohio
Mansfield is a city in and the county seat of Richland County, Ohio, United States. Located midway between Columbus and Cleveland via Interstate 71, it is part of Northeast Ohio region in the western foothills of the Allegheny Plateau. The city lies approximately southwest of Cleveland, southwest of Akron and northeast of Columbus. Oscar Cobb was an American architect of theaters and more. Several of his works are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army (United States Army), Union Navy (U.S. Navy), and the Marines who served in the American Civil War. It was founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, and grew to include hundreds of "posts" (local community units) across the North and West. It was dissolved in 1956 at the death of its last member. Elektro
Elektro is the nickname of a robot built by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in its Mansfield, Ohio facility between 1937 and 1938. Seven feet tall (2.1 m), weighing 265 pounds (120.2 kg), humanoid in appearance, he could walk by voice command, speak about 700 words (using a 78-rpm record player), smoke cigarettes, blow up balloons, and move his head and arms. Elektro's body consisted of a steel gear, cam and motor skeleton covered by an aluminum skin. His photoelectric "eyes" could distinguish red and green light. He was on exhibit at the 1939 New York World's Fair and reappeared at that fair in 1940, with "Sparko", a robot dog that could bark, sit, and beg to humans. Soldiers' Memorial Library
Soldiers' Memorial Library is a historic library building at the junction of Park Row and Union Street in Mansfield, Massachusetts. The -story Gothic Revival structure was designed by the noted firm of Peabody and Stearns, and built in 1899–1901. The building and land were primarily a gift from Elizabeth F. Noble. It was designed to house the public library on the ground floor, and provide a memorial to the town's American Civil War soldiers on the upper floor. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. In 2013 the building was housing school administrative offices.
