Manolis Glezos
Manolis Glezos ( el, Μανώλης Γλέζος; 9 September 1922 – 30 March 2020) was a Greek left-wing politician, journalist, author, and folk hero, best known for his participation in the World War II resistance. In Greece, he is best remembered for taking down the Flag of Nazi Germany from the Acropolis during the Axis occupation of Greece, along with Lakis Santas. After the end of the Occupation, his left-wing political beliefs and activism led to him being sentenced to death thrice; his imprisonments and legal troubles were often the topic of international interest, until his permanent release in 1971. Since the restoration of democracy in 1974, he had been active as a politician, becoming a Member of the Greek Parliament for various left-wing parties over the years. Manolis Papamakarios
Emmanouil "Manolis" "Manos" Papamakarios (Greek: Εμμανουήλ "Μανόλης" "Μάνος" Παπαμακάριος; born August 26, 1980) is a retired Greek professional basketball player. He is 1.92 m (6 ft 3 in) tall and he mainly played as a shooting guard, but he could also play at the point guard, point forward, and small forward positions. Professional playing career Born in Athens, Greece, Papamakarios began his professional basketball career with the Greek League club Peristeri in 1998. He then moved to Makedonikos in 2004, and then to Olympiacos Piraeus in 2005. Manolis Andronikos
Manolis Andronikos ( el, Μανόλης Ανδρόνικος) (October 23, 1919 – March 30, 1992) was a Greek archaeologist and a professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Biography Andronikos was born on October 23, 1919 at Bursa ( el, Προύσα). Later, his family moved to Thessaloniki. He studied philosophy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in 1952 became a professor of Classical Archeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Later he continued his studies at Oxford University with professor Sir John D. Beazley (1954–1955). He came back to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1957 where he taught Archeology first as instructor and later (1964) as professor. Manolis Roubakis ( el, Μανώλης Ρουμπάκης; born 6 January 1979) is a Greek professional footballer who plays for Atsalenios in the Greek Football League 2. Despite being right-footed, his natural position is left back; however, he's comfortable playing in both flanks of the defence. Roubakis spent the majority of his career at Crete-based clubs, with a brief six-month spell at Panathinaikos in Athens. Manolis Anagnostakis (10 March 1925 – 23 June 2005) was a Greek poet and critic at the forefront of the Marxist and existentialist poetry movements arising during and after the Greek Civil War in the late 1940s. Anagnostakis was a leader amongst his contemporaries and influenced the generation of poets immediately after him. His poems have been honored in Greece's national awards and arranged and sung by contemporary musicians. In spite of his accomplishments, Philip Ramp notes that Anagnostakis "is the least known, to an English speaking audience, of the major Greek poets of his generation." Life Anagnostakis was born in Thessaloniki and trained as a doctor, specializing in radiology. Manolis Angelopoulos ( el, Μανώλης Αγγελόπουλος; 8 April 1939 – 2 April 1989) was a Greek singer of Gypsy origin. Biography During his childhood Angelopoulos traveled all over Greece with his Hellenized-Gypsy family caravan selling a variety of goods from carpets to watermelons. The caravan trucks had a microphone and he began to sell these items through the use of his singing voice over the loudspeakers. After losing his father when he was 13, he tried to help his family by working in several clubs. His singing talent attracted many composers and producers offering him the opportunity to record his first song in 1957. Manolis Kalomiris ( el, Μανώλης Καλομοίρης; December 14, 1883, Smyrna – April 3, 1962, Athens) was a Greek classical composer. He was the founder of the Greek National School of Music. Biography Born in Smyrna, he attended school in Constantinople and studied piano and composition in Vienna. After working for a few years as a piano teacher in Kharkov (then Russia and now Ukraine) he settled in Athens.
