Manizales - Mariquita Cableway
The Manizales - Mariquita Cableway was a cableway used for transporting coffee, that connected Mariquita ( Tolima) with the city of Manizales ( Caldas), both in central Colombia. It was one of the most important engineering works carried out in Colombia in response to the difficult topography of the region, that hindered the construction of a railroad. History In the first decade of the twentieth century, an English company called The Ropeway Extension, obtained a concession from the Colombian government to build a ropeway (at the time, the longest one in the world), which cover a distance of approximately 72 kilometers between Mariquita, in Tolima and Manizales in Caldas. This would enable a link between the Colombian coffee growing axis and the ports on the Magdalena River. So far, the only roads that could have been used, were dirt roads. Torre De Herveo
Torre de Herveo ( en, Tower of Herveo), also known as Torre del Cable ( en, Cable Tower), is a wooden Colombian lattice tower which was the tallest of the support towers of the Manizales - Mariquita Cableway. The Torre de Herveo was in service from 1922 to 1961. It only serves as a monument and as transportation today. The engineer who built the tower was James Lindsay. Wood was chosen as the building material for the tower and was built with approximately 1,470 blocks of timber from the wood of Guaiac, Mahogany, Bay and Comino trees. History Engineer James Lindsay designed the Torre de Herveo in 1922. His plan was put to work afterwards. When its construction was finished, the tower became a tall support tower since then until 1961. It became a monument since the shutdown of the cableway. Mariquita, Tolima
San Sebastián de Mariquita is a town and municipality in the Tolima department of Colombia, about northwest of Bogotá. This town and municipality contains several important Spanish settlements that were located here due to its vicinity to the Magdalena River. Today, Mariquita is frequented by tourists from the capital visiting attractions like the Medina Waterfalls (''Cataratas de Medina'') and the mint (''Casa de la Moneda''). Magdalena River
The Magdalena River ( es, Río Magdalena, ; less commonly ) is the main river of Colombia, flowing northward about through the western half of the country. It takes its name from the biblical figure Mary Magdalene.
